Obama’s visit to India | read between the lines | RAMESH ARORA (Advocate) | 11/9/2010 10:51:06 PM |
| It is admitted factor and open secret that role of India in changing world scenario was recognized properly by US President. Barack Obama during his recent visit to India. US President tried to treat India and United States as equal partners and not as senior or junior. That is why Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday declared that India and the US have decided to work as equals in “a strategic relationship that will positively and decisively influence world peace”, role of India was also considered of great importance in the functioning of bodies like G-20. Contribution of India including providing “Zero” to the world for calculation was appreciated alongwith other fields of life. Emphasis and stress was also given over trade and liberal policies to increase potential of export and import. An assurance to favour India, about the permanent seat in United Nation Security Council (UNSC) is welcoming step,. but at the same time, much more was said about non attention of Indian government about violation of human rights in different parts of the world and its policy not to interfere into the working of other countries. This may be a sort of rider for permanent seat. Obama said that responsibility will also increase with the power. He also assured that terrorism is to be controlled and fought jointly. He also expressed his concern and agreeing not to mediate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir issue. He favoured stability in Pakistan. But we should also try to read between the lines that we can not depend upon US to defend our national interest. Although good relationship should be welcomed and be maintained. US have soft approach towards Pakistan, hub of terrorism, that may be due to growing power of China or may be an out look to dispel the impression that Christians and Muslims are not at war. Especially when United States talks about Iraq and Iran problem, as both are Muslim nations. The soft approach of United States towards “Israel” is also another yard stick to deal the issues of vital importance, while framing their policy about Paksitan. India is facing threat of terrorism since 1989 especially in state of Jammu and Kashmir. Many have lost their lives in fighting with Pak sponsored terrorism. India has demanded at International forum also that Pakistan should be declared as terrorist state. But this do not suit to America. That is why during his visit to India, Obama did not reply this suggestion put forth to him, as a question by a student. He emphasized the need for stable Pakistan. Although, he also agreed and admitted India’s concern about training camps in Pakistan. Let us understand that USA have its own policies and definitely they will watch their interest first. India should also watch its interest at top priority and should not take America by words. During NDA government, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the than Prime Minister, had rejected the proposal of sending Indian Armed Forces to join hands with other forces to attack Iraq. Even request of US was rejected. Now America has declared a policy that it want to withdraw from Afghanistan. They are appreciating role of India and will like to involve Indian forces for internal stability in Afghanistan. It is also possible that America, being a super power and in order to maintain its supremacy, may extend logistic support to India in all respects against China. China is other wise uncomfortable due to increase in Indian power and Indian economy. China is unpredictable and have maintained its wrong policy of visa about Jammu and Kashmir inspite of protest by Indian government. Although China has rebutted Indian stand about presence of its forces in PoK,. Gilgit and Baltistan,. but fact remain that rebuttal can not be trusted. In such an atmosphere, India have to stand and face challenges although being atomic power, 1962 can not be repeated. Hence in such atmosphere role of USA is also an important factor. The visit of Barack Obama hence carries more significance. Especially when his party has suffered a loss in recent elections. American economy have also suffered a set back and inflation has been increased. That is why America want to increase jobs for its citizens. They know that India is also a big market for selling the technology and military related items. Approach of USA towards the Pakistan and China is totally different from India. They are deeply concerned with 9/11 and not much about 26/11. They have adopted different yard stick to deal the militancy. It is also fact that when Jammu & Kashmir was facing extreme challenge from militancy they kept mum. Their human right approach is a weapon to interfere in the sovereignty of other countries while Indian culture recognize brotherhood and peace of world by Dharma saying SARVA-Bhavantu Sukhinam” and Vasu Dev Katumkam” that is peace for all and universe is like a family. Although like Russia state is not the dominating factor and in US individual freedom has been considered as supreme. America recognize human right through constitution and India recognized human right through way of life. India after getting independence in 1947, adopted federal form of constitution and different provisions of Unitary Form of Constitution. America is an example of pure federal structure based on agreement between different states. Rather, there is basic difference in thinking because we consider India as one unit and in other way, we call it Bharat Mata and consider different states as part of this great concept and commitment, while USA formation is purely on the basis of Union of States to form United State of America. In fact Indian do not want to interfere in the working of different countries and have respect for their Independent character and sovereignty but at the same time America tries to interfere into the working of others on the name of protection of Human rights and works as super cop. Hence, we cannot trust much what Obama have said in the beginning of 2nd Trip to Asian countries. It may be a part of strategy to mark its full presence in Asia. Hence, we have to consider the statement made by Barack Obama and the same is to read between the lines.
