CM inaugurates Sub-Junior National Kabaddi Championship

JAMMU, November 10: Describing sports an important catalyst to kindle enthusiasm in youth in achieving goals, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said that his government was taking required measures to give considerable fillip to sports activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister was speaking on the inaugural of the 22nd National Sub-Junior Kabaddi Championship at MA Stadium here this afternoon. He highlighted the importance of sports in character and capacity building of young persons.
“Sports provide ample opportunity to youth of different areas and cultures to mingle with each other, share views and develop life time relations. Sports also inculcate spirit of dedication, zest and determination in boys and girls and help them face the challenges of life with courage and bravely”, he added.
The Chief Minister further said “Participation in sports activities has now become an integral part of studies and without these activities education is not considered complete”. He asked the young boys and girls to fully take part in different sports and develop spirit of sportsmanship to accomplish tasks.
Omar Abdullah expressed the hope that the participants in the championship will avail the opportunity to visit tourist places in Jammu and also pay a visit to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. He said Jammu and Kashmir besides being traditional host of highest standard for all kinds of guest, also possessed captivating scenic splendor of unparallel excellence. “You should visit the places of tourist attraction after the completion of the championship”, he advised the participants and asked the Organizers to facilitate this.
On the introduction of Kabaddi in Asian Games, Omar said, “The game was indigenous to India and while popularizing it world over we should ensure that its basic rules were not changed to suit the foreigners as was done in case of Hockey.”
He said Hockey too was of indigenous nature. “We taught the game to outside world, they changed the rules, introduced astroturf and altered its techniques to fit their conditions. This has put India and other Asian countries on the back foot and today Hockey has become the game of foreigners”, he said and warned of similar consequences for Kabaddi if the indigenous rules were not strictly adhered to.
Omar Abdullah said that his government would like the boys and girls of the state to achieve new highs in sports and earn laurels to Jammu and Kashmir by winning medals at national and international level. He said Government would extend every help in this regard to the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) and the organizations concerned. He congratulated the Jammu and Kashmir Kabaddi Association for organizing the national championship in Jammu in collaboration with J&K State Sports Council. He also expressed the hope that a similar championship would be held in Srinagar in near future so that the talent in this game in the Valley gets encouragement.
Minister for Sports, RS Chib gave resume of the measures government has taken under the leadership of Omar Abdullah to give boost to sports activities and provide necessary infrastructure for various games.
He said Sports Council was being constituted to develop various sports in the State and nurture the sports persons.
President of Kabaddi Federation of India, JS Gehlot, the president of Jammu and Kashmir Kabaddi Association, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta and secretary, J&K Sports Council also spoke on the occasion. Chairman of the Association, Anil Gupta presented the vote of thanks.
Present among others were Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Advisor to the Chief Minister, Mubarak Gul.
The Championship inaugurated today will conclude on November 13. In all, 56 teams from all over the country are taking part in this four-day event.
Earlier, the Chief Minister was introduced to the players on the occasion. The members of participating teams took part in an inaugural march past while playing of bands and releasing of balloons and pigeons also marked the inaugural function. A cultural programme was presented by the students of Lawrence Public School.
