Taming corrupt elements is need of the hour
11/10/2010 10:28:04 PM
Well Tuesday can be described as a day of the Congress led UPA Government's tirade against corruption as two important people lost their face when they were told to quit. That the Maharashtra Chief Minister,Ashok Chavan, was on his way out as was the case with Suresh Kalmadi,Secretary Congress Parliamentary Party, was expected but a week's delay was the result of Obama's four day stay in India. The central Government did not want to kick up any political row at a time when Obama, who had described India as an emerging super power, was in Delhi.Soon after Obama and his wife boarded a plane for their journey to another country the Congress high command struck like a tornado. And Ashok Chavan, who has been allegedly involved in the high profile Adarsh colony scam, was asked to submit his resignation to the Governor.Chavan dutifully followed the instructions. He had no other alternative except to implement the instructions given to him by the AICC Chief,Sonia Gandhi. The Congress tornado removed Suresh Kalmadi, better known for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore recently concluded Commonwealth Games scam. The Congress party, reports said, would have not shown tremendous speed in showing door to Chavan and Kalmadi had not the opposition parties, especially the BJP,announced that they would disrupt proceedings in the Parliament in case the Government did not take immediate action against those involved in the two scams. Both the scams are being investigated into and the CBI too has been asked to step in.Even after the Government appointed a two-member committee, comprising the Finance Minister,Pranab Mukherjee, and the Defence Minister,A.K.Antony,to carry a probe into the Adarsh Colony scam,Antony directed the CBI to inquire into various gamuts of the scam involving top military officers. The CBI has been asked to find out who,why and how a no objection certificate had been issued to those who had planned to construct the 31-storey complex. It has been asked as to how senior military officers besides politicians and their relations, were able to secure possession of the flats which were initially meant for war widows and Kargil martyrs. When compared to the Commonwealth Games scam the Adarsh Colony scam is considered as a major scandal which had the potential of soiling and slighting the image of top military officers and political leaders. It is part of the political scene in India if Chavan and Kalmadi are shown the door but it would be a major tragedy if top military officers, including several Lieutant Generals,Major Generals and Brigadiers, are found to have been involved in the scam.In fact senior functionaries of the Navy and the Army are allegedly involved in another land grab in Faridabad and the matter too was being investigated into.Once the involvement of the senior military functionaries in these scams was established it would reveal that even the disciplined soldiers and the field commaners in the three wings of the Armed Forces have not remained untouched by the corrupt practices rampant among politicians and bureaucrats of different hues.India has already earned a bad name as a nation of the corrupt politicians and if the men from tthe military too are found to be involved in one scam or the other it could add dark dimensions to India's rich history and tradition. If the Congress led UPA Government seems to be interested in tackling corruption it should target people who occupy ministerial and senior posts in Government departments. After showing doors to these corrupt people in the centre the Government of India should give wide powers to the CBI to tackle scams and other irregularities in various states in the country.Hitherto no Government in the centre and in the states have been serious on fighting corrupt elements and this has been responsible for the menace to have spread right from the top to the bottom.
