Examination Malpractices
Subodh Bhasin11/10/2010 10:31:25 PM
Examination Malpractices Or Cheating during examination has become an accepted part of our academic culture which represent disrespect for rules, fair play, and honesty. Cheating which may be defined as Examination Malpractices has become so widespread that there is hardly any examination session at any level which does not witness emergence of new ways of cheating, losing the credibility of the examination process
The value of any education system lies in its ability to fulfill the goals of education. It is an examination process which makes the difference. The goal of educational system becomes mirage if examination ethics is encouraged.
The examination malpractices or cheating is “Any Act Of Omission Or Commission By A Person Who During Or After Any Examination Fraudently Secure Any Unfair Advantage For Himself Or Any Other Person In Such A Manner That Contradict The Rule And Regulation, Undermining The Validity, Reliability, Authenticity Of The Examination And The Integrity Of The Certificate Issued.”
Cheating or examination malpractices are any irregular behavior exhibited by a candidate or anybody charged with the conduct of examination that contradict the rules and regulations of examining authority.
Though cheating is not a regular phenomenon yet it is a matter of concern in our developing society. It has been seen and observed that parents and teacher take active part directly or indirectly. Parents go to the extent of bribing giving way towards unsecured success for their wards and teachers encourage examination malpractices because they lack zeal to work and to be praised for the job not done. Students are involved because they want to pass the exam. These are the main reasons why malpractices still thrives despite its grave consequences.
The examination malpractices include –Cheating at examination halls, Stealing of Question Papers, Impersonation, Obstruction in Supervision, Forgery Of Result Slips, Breach of Duty etc.
No doubt government examination bodies and other agencies have made lot of efforts to reduce the incidents of examination malpractices and the problem related to it. Although the effect seems to be yielding some results yet examination malpractices still features in our examination system.
The examination malpractices seems to be aggravated by the large scale and shameful involvement of dishonest and greedy teachers, school heads, parents and all those who take part in examination administration. It is because of examination malpractices that the certificate issued after the completion of session has almost lost its credibility. Certificate and result slips no longer seem to reflect skill and competence. Accusing fingers have been pointed at Teachers, School Heads , Parents, Students, Examination Officials and even law abiding agencies are responsible for examination malpractices in the education system.
Examination Malpractices is influenced by many factors such as lack of confidence due to inadequate preparation, peer influence, societal influence, parental support and poor facilities in schools.
Our society places great emphasis on success goals without much concerning on institutional means of attaining this goal. Now a days society is driven by the desire for success ignoring the means used in achieving success.
An examination malpractice is closely related to corruption eroding the moral values of the society. Social, Economic, Political, Religious and Education are celebrated and Rewarded by virtue. As such those involved are set free through legislation and court room gymnastics. In a society where police can openly accept bribe on the highways why would those involve or connected with examination not accept monetary incentives Parents and guardians are ready to give encouragement and pay cost for their children to acquire certificate resulting into overvalue of certificates issued.
Ever since the certificate value system is at place rather than knowledge, skill and competence the students engage themselves in short cut means of acquiring these certificates resulting into parental indiscipline and abuse of wealth. Many parents believe that with their wealth they can catapult their children to any height in the society even if it involves buying question papers and bribing teachers and invligators to ensure that their children can pass the examination.
Our education system is largely certificate oriented and less emphasis is placed on knowledge, skill and competence which promotes acts of cheating as one can see a large section of young ones with certificates without knowledge and skills.
The inadequate funding and unequal distribution of funds undermine the quality of education affecting the teacher’s commitment in job leading to dissatisfied teachers by their work load, school facilities and services creating an environment which hampers the education system
An examination malpractice is a social evil that can damage the society to the extent of possibly a failed society and has very serious consequences. Examination Malpractices renders the goal of education invalid leading to irreversible loss of credibility of education. The fight against corruption cannot succeed if examination malpractices continues.
As Leaders Of Tomorrow Who Have Gone Through Examination Are Characterized By Fraudulent Youth Because It Is The Law Of Nature That “As We Nurture So Shall We Reap.” With this fraudulent behavior in any organization the youth find themselves and will be destined to a life of Crime, Fraud, and Corrupt Practices.
CURBING EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES
Empowering the Teachers: Great emphasis should be placed on teacher personality development with school development.
Great focus is needed in improving institutional and performance standards and such programs should be checked and funded by government.
Teacher Education Program should link to curriculum practices which can influence learner’s achievement.
Teachers empowerment should not be limited to professional development, allowance rather rewarding scheme, welfare schemes and other such types of incentives should be introduced.

Job environment should be interesting, worthwhile and enriched encouraging teachers commitment towards job.

Special welfare packages be put in place for examination officials to discourage them from financials and materialistic inducement from students, parents and others who otherwise want to subvert the examination process.

To curb such activities there should be regular campaigns, seminars, debates at grass root level which help the people to analyze true vale of education. In addition this will help in restoring the lost cherished moral values of honesty, hard work, dedication and uprightness.

If this trend is allowed to continue the society will end up with Doctors who can not differentiate between Vein and Artery, Lawyers who can not differentiate between Accused Person and the Complainant and similarly the Teachers who may not be able to spell the words correctly. It is our apathy that in our society Certificates act as Passport to a job, ignoring the competence and skill acquisition. The assessment of studies should no longer be based on one almighty passing examination by unfair means rather it should be continuous from the very first day to the last day of a particular session

Examination Malpractices is a social problem that has created havoc in the entire society and is a hydra headed problem that requires multi-dimensional approach. Any effort for resolving this problem must be collaborative involving all stake holders in the society, if not such efforts will end up being an exercise in futility.
