Durbaar chokes Jammu roads, 'traffic terror' adds to mayhem | Will 'VIPs' have a pity of harried commuters….? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 10: Huge traffic snarls….choked roads…. helpless commuters and complete chaos on roads……that is what Durbar has heralded this year in the winter capital, a situation no less than a 'mayhem' and torture that is aggravated further by mishandling and misdirection of 'arrogant' lot of traffic cops most of whom are incompetent to control the upsurge of vehicles on the roads. It will be no exaggeration to term the scene on almost all key roads of Jammu for the last three days as enforced 'traffic terror', all thanks to VIP movements and their ever obedient traffic cops who turn hysterical at the sight of the cavalcade of mantris. Traffic in Jammu is never smooth nor properly regulated for a variety of reasons. But come Durbar, it throws everything out of gear, movement of vehicles almost standstill, more so on the roads frequented heavily by the VIPs. This year the roads have been flooded with an upsurge of vehicles both government owned as well as the private ones which have brought the entire city to a grinding halt as the heavy and thick presence on all directions is causing unprecedented jams not only during the peak hours but all through the day. Last two days have been witnessing maddening traffic snarls even during the day time, torturous for small school children who are made to wait for long to cross through brief stretches, all because VIPs have to pass through with their long cavalcades. In some areas like Residency Road it is proving to be a punishment for children to pass through the adjoining roads leading to Gujjar Nagar on one end or down the Mansar Hotel road to reach other areas of city. In utter helpless condition of chaotic scenes even small kids, tired, carrying heavy bags, prefer to tread the small distance on foot, rather than remaining stranded and wasting time in huge jams. While massive traffic snarls continue to play havoc on almost all the roads of Jammu, including some parts of flyover which remain jammed with uneven, haphazard movement of vehicles, traffic cops and men in khaki in general instead of providing real respite are only turning the situations chaotic by their unprofessional and arrogant modus operandi. The way they perform their duties gives an impression their presence on the roads is only meant for VIPs, including CM sahib….and other mantris, whose movement at all costs has to be hurdle free. At many points there is uncalled for stoppage of common commuters and at some places the vehicles are even forcibly stopped from taking the route, all because of the presence of some VIP from that end or he has to arrive or leave . It just happened last evening on the so called posh Residency road when the vehicle owners were brazenly restricted not allowed to enter the stretch of DPS school because some VIP had entered that area for a private visit. The attitude of posse of arrogant cops was no less than dictatorial amounting to huge embarrassment and harassment to commuters passing through busy Shahidi chowk. Traffic terror is also throwing its tentacles by way of whimsical behaviour of cops , mainly around Residency road and Mansar hotel near Raghunath temple when they choose to lift the parked vehicles in a pick and choose manner, for apparent reasons. The "royal cops' come forth in equally royal manner in their vehicles only to announce in loud manner they are going to lift a particular vehicle for wrong parking, no matter there are scores of others already parked which remain untouched, for the reason too known to be mentioned. Amid all this chaos and mayhem on roads, which looks only a beginning for the 6 month long ordeal people here have to brace for, commuters are only saying, "Will VIPs have some pity ….guide the 'misguided' cops to regulate and behave in a professional manner rather than indulge in pleasing them ….? |
