Commoner is the only sufferer
5 months of agitation
11/10/2010 10:51:25 PM
ET REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 10: The on-going agitation commenced on June 11. Five months down the line, a vital question remains unanswered. Who has gained what?
Dismembered bodies, amputated limbs, pools of blood, shattered window panes, smashed wind screens, restrictions, strikes, curfews and chaos. This is what the one time abode of saints witnessed in these five months. Who has gained what? The question haunts the commoner.
Syed Ali Geelani believes a strong political statement had been made through this agitation. According to him, the world community focussed its attention on Kashmir. The government succeeded in enforcing its writ especially after Eid-ul-Fitr. But the commoner suffered. A Srinagar based scribe narrated the plight of the commoner on July 24.
She saw an old woman on posh bund in the summer capital near a garbage dump. A dozen dogs and an equal number of crows gave her company. The woman, in her 60s was shabbily dressed in a worn out Pheran. She was looking for something in the heap of garbage. Foul smell emanating from the heap did not deter her from abandoning the search. Her worst fears came true. Good God! The woman was looking for food. Meanwhile, the old woman took out something from the garbage dump. Yes, it was food and the scribe missed a beat when she saw her eating it. Then she left leaving behind the dogs that, unlike humans, were generous enough to share their feast with her. The shattered scribe blamed the separatists and for the old woman's miserable plight. The continuous strikes and curfews have dealt a severe blow to the economy. The way-side vendors have virtually earned nothing since the agitation commenced. The scribe had plans to take up the matter with the Hurriyat leaders. But a statement came from Geelani's office. `A big cause cannot be sacrificed for small things like education and hunger.' Yes, nobody goes to bed without food in Kashmir. The woman got the food she needed. Where from? Does not matter in a place where people pursue a `big cause'.
