Musharraf flings a stone to kill two birds | | | Early Times Report (Behind the veil)
Jammu,November 11:-In a bid to smoothen the road that could facilitate his return journey to Pakistan, former Pr esident,Pervez Musharraf, has cautioned the establishment in Islamabad against carrying out an operation,in one go,against Lashkar-i-Toiba and other militant outfits in Pakistan. It is safe to carry out these operations gradually instead of "rocking the boat " that could sink,Musharraf stated while addressing Atlantic think-tank council in Washington. He pleaded for a piecemeal action against Lashkar and other militant outfits whose activists had plans of fighting against Government forces in the Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir.Musharraf, who had banned Lashkar-i-Toiba and jash-e-Mohammd in 2002,claimed that these militant outfits had become quite popular in Pakistan because of their plan of fighting against Government forces in Jammu and Kashmir. This way Musharraf does not want the establishment in Islamabad to order a major crackdown against these rebel outfits which had the potential of giving rise to an equally major law and order problem in Pakistan. The latest statement of Musharraf is seen as a deviation from his known stand of adopting soft policy towards India. At one stage political analysts including top political leaders in Pakistan have claimed that had Pervez Musharraf continued to head the Government in Islamabad he would have been instrumental in settling the Kashmir issue. If it has been the case why major shift in Musharraf's Kashmir policy? Two factors seem to have motivated Musharraf to back the militants" anti-India operations in Jammu and Kashmir.First,he wants to widen the wedge between Washington and Islamabad so that Pakistan Government was surmounted by bigger problems. Secondly, Musharraf possibly believes that once the chasm between Washington and Islamabad further widened it could encourage New Delhi for delaying resumption of the composite dialogue. He presuambly believes that once the US Government, which wants effective steps against terrorists in Pakistan and in Pak-Afghan border belt, gets annoyed with the Government headed by Asif Ali Zardari it could improve chances for Musharraf's political resurgence in Pakistan. In fact not only the US Government but those in the NATO countries have been telling Islamabad, day in and day out, that it should prevent the soil of Pakistan from being used for exporting terror to various countries in general and to Jammu and Kashmir in particular . The latst statement of Musharraf is also part of his plan to keep militant groups in good humour so that their activists did not commit any mischief against him the moment he starts his return journey to Pakistan for contesting the next election. He has tried to kill two birds with one stone. He would keep militants in good humour and create differences between washington and Islamabad which could prove beneficial for the former President in staging a comeback in Pakistan's politics.
