Rajat, Akriti Kotwal bag best J&K player titles ------------------ | -------- Stany of Karnataka, TN’s Akshaya emerge U-17 Chess champion | | Early Times Report JAMMU, November 11: Stunning the higher ranked International Masters (IMs), Stany GA of Karnataka today lifted the boys’ championship trophy securing highest nine points in the week-long XXI National Under-17 Chess Championship concluded at Heritage School in the outskirts of the city, here. The competition was so tough among the higher ranked boys that no body was clear about who was going to win the championship till the last board was decided this afternoon. International Master, Debashis Das (2411) of Orissa bagged second position while Gusain Himal of Chandigarh remained third. Other two IMs, Prasanna Rao of Maharashtra and Narayanan Srinath of Tamil Nadu had to contain with sixth and seventh place respectively in the 15 positions declared by the organizers, All J&K Chess Association. On the other side, the results were on expected lines in girls section with A Akshaya of Tamil Nadu lifting the title with 9.5 points. Higher ranked in the competition, WFM Saranya J of Tamil Nadu bagged second place with nine points, followed by Visalatchi R, again of Tamil Nadu at third spot. Despite improved performance, no one from host Jammu and Kashmir could find berth among the first 15 placed declared today. However, for their exceptional show, Rajat Bhardwaj was adjudged best boy among those participating from host J&K. On similar lines, Akriti Kotwal was declared best among girls. A special prize was given away to youngest participant of the competition, Arushi Kotwal. In all, 71 (35 rated and 3 IMs) boys and 37 (18 rated and 1 WFM) girls took part in this championship. In the valedictory function, Principal of Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS) Sidhra, Dr A Kumar was chief guest, who along with guest of honour, former India handball captain and DySP with J&K Police, Ranjit Singh distributed prizes among the winners. Earlier, chief arbiter of the championship, Dharminder Kumar presented a brief note of the championship. While lauding the role of the management of the Heritage School for being so hospitable, Dharminder praised the office bearers of All J&K Chess Association for being real promoters of the game in this part of the country. Later, chairman of the Heritage School, Sanjeev Gupta expressed his gratitude to all those who extended a helping hand in the successful conduct of the championship. --------
