PDP flays Govt, ASI for neglecting mughal sarias | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12: Senior PDP leader Shahzad Khan has criticised the government and the Archaeological Survey of India for their negligent attitude towards the number of Mughal sarias lined up on the Mughal Road. Earlier. Shahzad Khan conducted a tour of these structures in the area and expressed regret over the dilapidated condition of the Mughal heritage. Giving a detail on the present status of the structures, Shahzad Khan said that most of these sarais were under the army and police occupation and ruthlessly being used as headquarters and residential quarters. The Mughal sarais at Anayatpur, Muradpur, Fatehpur and Saaj and the Rajouri Mughal garden, located in the heart of the town near Jhulla Bridge, are encroached upon by the residents in connivance with the revenue authorities. The Aliabad Sarai is often being used as a temporary shelter by the troops stationed in the area besides by travellers, Gujjars and Bakarwals visiting the area for pasture. It is the only structure preserved to some extent. The areas within the complex of these structures are used for agricultural as well as dwelling purposes. Most of the remaining sarais, including Ratanpir Sarai have been reduced to rubbles and only the carcass is left. It’s a pity that all these structures are in the process of decay but for the negligence by the authorities. Khan also said that the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch have immense unexplored potentials for development of tourism. Lambasting the revenue authorities, he said that they are no less responsible for harming these monuments. Illegal encroachments of the unattended land within the premises of these buildings by the civilians are not being stopped by them rather they are hand in gloves with the civilians who have got these land illegally registered in names of the encroaching parties. Such people including the revenue authorities should be brought to books without further delay. He also alleged that the Archaeological Survey of India has adopted a step-motherly treatment towards these structures. Had it taken timely action, care and renovation, these monuments would have been alive and in a better condition and these heritage sites along the Mughal Road would undoubtedly have become great tourist attractions, he added.
