Holistic approach needed for better traffic management: DCM

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 12 – Stressing on the need to have holistic approach for effective traffic management in Jammu city, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand said that coordinated efforts of concerned departments are required to address the problem of traffic congestion in winter capital.
The Deputy Chief Minister said this while chairing a high level review meeting on traffic management in winter capital, here today.
Divisional commissioner, Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Inspector General, Traffic H. K. Lohia, Deputy Inspector General, Traffic, Dr. Kamal Saini, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma, Vice Chairman JDA, Vinod Sharma, CEO, SUIDA, G. M. Mir, Commissioner JMC, S. C. Sahani, and senior officers of concerned departments were also present.
Deliberating upon strategies to address traffic congestion in the city, Tara Chand said that both long term and short terms measures are needed to check the growing traffic. He said that not only fresh traffic surveys, alternate roads proposals are to be undertaken but immediate short term measures like commuter sensitization, launching of joint special traffic management drives are also required.
Taking cognizance of the difficulty pedestrians face, Deputy Chief Minister directed the JMC authorities to clear footpaths from illegal encroachment and identify sites for construction of over head bridges at various locations in Jammu city.
Calling for utilizing scientific techniques for better traffic management, Tara Chand said an Intelligent Traffic Management System needs to be implemented in Jammu city, which will go a long way in addressing traffic concerns of the city. The integrated system involves installation of traffic lights, cameras to check over-speeding, besides constructing multi-tier parking as well as redesigning and remodeling existing parking facilities at various locations in the city.
