Luthra Memorial India Open Chess tourney begins

JAMMU, Nov 13: Organised by All Jammu and Kashmir Chess Association, the B R Luthra Memorial All India Open Rs one lakh cash prize money Chess Tournament got underway at Luthra College of Education, here today.
The five-day long event was declared open by Chairman of Luthra College of Education, Rajiv Luthra in a well attended opening function by lighting the traditional lamp.
In his address to the participants from all over the country, the chief guest welcomed them in the City of Temples and wished success. He also appreciated the initiative of the Chess Association by providing the local players a chance to compete against the best stuff in the country by organizing the tournament.
Over 60 young and middle aged persons from states of Assam, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and host J&K are taking part in this competition.
Prominent among others present in the opening were Association president Atul Gupta and general secretary, Baldev Raj as also members, Raj Kumar and Ankush.
Later, talking to our correspondent chief arbiter of the tournament, international arbiter, Dharminder said, “In this competition, players have got an opportunity to get international rating in chess while other already rated will have a chance to further improve their standings.”
Meanwhile, in the first round of the competition, mostly the outsiders emerged winners. The most attractive part of the round one was a match between eldest and youngest participant. However, eldest, 54-year old, Kanti Lal Dabe of Rajasthan defeated her opponent, six-year old, Arushi Kotwal of Jammu to secure a point.
