3 days gone, BSNL nets services hit banking | Customers unable to make transactions, face hardships | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 13: The indiscriminate digging of city roads for laying of sewage pipes over the last two years have brought lot of miseries for Jammuites including dust, bumpy rides, traffic jams and several other complicacies. And the latest causalities of the haphazard digging are some of the banks in the city and thousands of their customers, who are unable to make any transaction for the last three days since the internet services in branches of Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Jammu Kashmir Bank, Canal Road are down due to cutting of optical wires of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) near Shakuntla Cinema complex. Even some of the ATMs located in the area are not properly functioning due to the disconnection. Serpentine queues could be seen at ATMs particularly that of PNB, services of which have been severely affected. At the petrol filling stations, people faced problems in using ATMs and petro cards as card reader machines were not functioning. "I am unable to withdraw money at the PNB's ATMs as where ever I go the vending machines were out of order which was not less than an agony for me and several others," said Kamal Anand Due to the link failure, a large number of customers were unable to draw cash or do other sundry banking business. Clearance of cheques has been abysmally slow in both the banks due to non-connectivity of BSNL lines. Anxious customers could be seen queuing up at different banks as alternative lease lines from private operators were comparatively slow, said sources Pensioners were also affected who are already late in getting their pension due to festive season of Diwali and Jammu bandh on Novemebr 8. "I am doing the rounds of PNB, Canal Road for the last three days to withdraw my pension but every time the bank staff says that due to the linkage problem, amount can not be withdrawn….. They do not own the responsibility of the fault and squarely blame BSNL authorities for not rectifying the snag." said a pensioner on condition of anonymity. A number of persons were unable to submit their tax as they refused to accept returns due to poor link failure. There are clear indications that lack of responsibility on part of the agencies concerned which take up the road digging work and the BSNL led to the chaos. However when contacted, DGM BSNL Savarakar, denied having any knowledge of cable cutting due to which the networking of banks have been collapsed since Thursday. "We did not receive any complaint from the management of the affected banks. I will confirm the incident first and if necessary remedial measures would be initiated accordingly." DGM told Early Times. |
