JAMMU, Nov 14: University of Jammu has been ideal rehabilitation centre for relatives and friends of veteran Journalists, bureaucrats, politicians, business tycoons and certain blue-eyed 'Dabang' student leaders.
Although, both Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor of university have so far preferred silence over taking cognizance of reports appearing in several local dailies regarding illegal and backdoor appointments which were order of the day during former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amitabh Mattoo's tenure. Sole criterion of these appointments was candidate's proximity with veteran Journalists, bureaucrats, politicians, business tycoons and certain blue-eyed 'Dabang' student leaders.
An in-depth analysis of appointments made in Jammu University during Mattoo's tenure points towards the fact that competition was never the criteria and instead, it was appeasement which he preferred. An insider maintained that a Journalist got his 'girl friend' appointed as Junior Assistant in the university within days of her being sacked by a private company where she was working as an accountant.
Not only this, son of close aide of another prominent journalist was appointed on a prestigious position in the university immediately after Mattoo took over. He continued for some time Adhoc basis and thereafter, is now working permanently in the university. Further, the University choose to bypass all rules and regulations for promotions when the turn of Mattoo favorites came.
Treating university as an independent recruitment and promotion agency, Mattoo got two of his favorites (both faculty members) promoted as well as adjusted on plum postings. Relatives of several former ministers, senior police officers, well-connected business tycoons and some political leaders, all are working in different capacities and on key positions in the university.
Servants of two former ministers are also employees of Jammu University. Insiders maintain that if government initiates a comprehensive probe into the appointments made during Mattoo's tenure, results would be both scandalous and excruciating. Early Times has detailed account of appeasement appointments made during Mattoo's tenure and would unveil the same in the days ahead.
The mantra for appointment during Mattoo time was "Praise me in whatever way you can, at whatever position you are, in the media or in the cozy rooms of affluent important political and administrative quarters." Those who obeyed this mantra got more than what they anticipated from the former vice-chancellor. From Jobs to Soaps, they got benefits flowing towards them in heaps.
Mattoo's appeasement policy was such that even some "Dabang" student leaders managed to derive benefits for their close relatives and friends. Insiders affirmed that Mattoo used these student leaders alongwith certain other outsiders to settle scores with his opponents in the university.
A senior staffer in the university who has been witness to former VC's administrative plunder confirmed to early times that official records if investigated with utmost sincerity would unveil wrongs perpetuated by the former VC of Jammu University.
