Security sleuths oppose release of `mischief mongers’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, November 15 : Senior functionaries of security and intelligence agencies have suggested continued detention of separatists “with great mischief potential”. The suggestion, according to official sources, has come in the wake of government’s communication to security agencies to review the cases of separatists including those held for stone pelting. Senior leaders of the separatists camps have been demanding release of the detained people as part of the confidence building measures. Syed Ali Shah Geelani has included the issue of release of the detainees in his five-point charter of demands. He has already conveyed to the Government of India that separatists could join the process of dialogue only when these demands were met which included repeal of the AFSPA and the withdrawal of troops. Sources said that senior officers of the police and the intelligence agencies have conveyed to the state Government that if those having great mischief potential were released the situation in the Kashmir valley could again degenerate. They have made clear that the situation had started showing signs of improvement only after the mischief mongers had been arrested. The officials, sources said, have given a list of about 20 people wishing that they should not be released at this juncture. The list includes Masarat Alam, close associate of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, and Mian Abdul Qayoom, President Kashmir Bar Association. A senior police officer said that during the time Masarat Alam operated after Gelani's arrest he galvanized the public protest rallies and shutdowns.Similarly the situation in Kashmir had assumed unhealthy dimensions during the time Mian Qayoom was free. The state Government is yet to take a final decision after the interlocutors too favoured release of all the detained people in order to improve the ground situation. Senior security and intelligence sleuths also favour release of the detainees in a phased programme. “This will enable the officials to assess the situation rightly”, they said.
