Govt fails to get State’s share from Ranjit Sagar Dam: PDP
11/15/2010 10:08:56 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Kathua, Nov 15: Expressing concern over hardships being faced by the farmers of the Kathua district due to non-availability for irrigation facilities, general secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thakur Balbir Singh today said that state governments failure to get its share from Ranjit Sagar Dam has lead to scarcity of water and power crises in this belt, especially in Kandi areas.
Addressing a meeting of party workers near Hiranagar, Singh reminded the government that in the month of February this year had finalized a project to take its share of water and power from Ranjit Sagar Dam but the project till date remained only on papers. He said that farmers of the Kathua and Samba districts have been repeatedly asking the State Government to take some effective steps to force the Punjab Government to implement the agreement which was signed in the year 1973. He said that under the agreement, the State has to get 1150 cusecs water from the Dam but this agreement was yet to be implemented even after passing of 37 long years.
“It is unfortunate that farmers of Kathua and adjoining localities have been suffering due to non implementation of the agreement and government is not seriously solving this problem once for all”, he said and pointed out that if government sincerely take up this matter with Punjab Government, it will provide irrigation facilities to 1.33 lakh acres of land in Kathua and help on production of more than 2066 lakh tons of food grains besides solving problem of power crises.
Lambasting the coalition for its failure to effectively take up this issue with the neighbouring State, Balbir Singh rued that one and the only aim of this government was to enjoy power without caring wishes and aspirations of the people.. He also regretted that adequate facilities have not provided to the farmers to sell paddy in their respective areas.
Jagdish Singh, ex-Sarpanch, Brij Lal Sharma, ex-Sarpanch, Kulbushan Singh, ex-Sarpanch, Raghubir Singh, ex-Sarpanch, Sudesh Sapolia, ex-Sarpanch, Kartar Singh, Mir Singh, Raj Verma, Bunty and others also addressed the meeting.
