Omar listens to 4391 persons in 720 minutes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 15: Notwithstanding National Conference led coalition government's failure on all fronts, Omar Abdullah needs to be hailed for being a patient listener. In a single day he has listened to 4391 persons. The `remarkable feat' achieved by the young Chief Minister must find a place in the Guinness Book of world records. A paid advertisement, issued most probably by the information department appeared in most of the local dailies today. Although most of the newspapers that carried the advertisement have been deliberately curtailing their circulation for saving some ‘precious bucks’ the concerned department in a desperate bid to project the image of the Chief Minister `gifted' them the advertisement. The advertisement reads: "During Awami Mulaqat in Srinagar, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah met 4391 persons who called on him in a single day in the form of delegations as well as individual capacities continuously from morning till evening at his private office in Srinagar." For how many hours did the Chief Minister hold the `Awami Mulaqat? Even if he held it for twelve hours (which is impossible during autumn days), the Chief Minister had just 720 minutes at his disposal. Normally a person of ordinary prudence takes around five minutes to present his case. That means the Chief Minister had time for just 144 persons. People in a delegation take much time as all the persons that constitute it want to speak. The claims of the advertisement, therefore, cannot be taken as authentic. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron, Mufti Muhammad Sayed today issued a statement. While accusing the government of total failure he said : "The government seeks to convey evidence of its existence through paid advertisements of the ivory tower exercises of public contact." In the state of Jammu Kashmir and elsewhere, people call on ministers. Omar Abdullah happens to be the Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir. Naturally people will call on him. But why should the Government Issue paid advertisements to prove that people called on him? Has the concerned department any explanation to offer? |
