JAMMU, Nov 15: With both Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah taking no interest, Jammu and Kashmir government is unlikely to order probe into 'appeasement appointment' scam in Jammu University.
Sources said that so-called personnel rapport of former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof. Amitabh Mattoo with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Sigh, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, former Chief Ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed along with other relevant quarters in New Delhi is preventing the government from ordering a thorough probe into the appeasement appointment scam.
Besides, Mattoo's close links with media professionals both in national and international media supplemented by his involvement in track-II dialogue process going on between India and Pakistan is seemingly preventing the state government from initiating probe into his alleged administrative wrong doings. Like a wise king, Mattoo got his friend and colleague in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Prof. Varun Sahini appointed as vice-chancellor after he demitted the office in November 2008.
Sahini came in and from day one ensured continuity of Mattoo's appointees. He kept talking about transparency and honesty in public but either miserably failed or knowingly decided not to nail the alleged illegalities of his erstwhile JNU colleague. Sahini did manage to stop the appeasement appointments but has so far failed to raise questions over the continuity of several blue-eyed ones in the university.
A simple methodical survey of family background of serving officers, faculty members and other officials of Jammu University would be enough to know the truth and fix the responsibility. But with government especially Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's office more keen on rubbishing and rebutting news reports, state government is unlikely to return deserving individuals their due.
Citing an instance, a senior official of Jammu University said that the only achievement of the present Vice-Chancellor has been establishment of police post inside university campus. He added that present vice-chancellor was expected to order probe after looking at reports appearing in local dailies but he preferred going by the version of Mattoo's favorites in Jammu University.
Sources confirmed that all Mattoo favorites despite vehement protests have been elevated to their promised positions. They asserted that to keep the media under complete check and ensure censorship of news items against Mattoo, advertisements used to be issued in bulk to newspapers having readership in relevant political and administrative quarters.
Those who would point towards Mattoo's wrong doings would be brushed aside as "non-sense journalists" and the journalism of these papers used to be referred as "Yellow Journalism". Even in the present day, University officials categorically maintain that newspapers involved in "negative" news reporting are not to be fed with advertisements since it is both against the "democratic norms and societal relationships."
They assert "You take care of our needs and we would respond in the same manner. Who can claim sanity these days? Our criterion is fixed and we strictly go by that." Mattoo ensured that news and issues remained circled around him as long as he was Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Jammu university. He would love being centre of attraction and has been able transfer the same to every other individual working in the university.
