Natrang to stage mega shows of ‘Bawa Jitto’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 17: Natrang is going to organize mega theatrical event on the supreme sacrifice of Dogra folk legend ‘Bawa Jitto’ at ‘Jhiri Mela’ on November 20 and 21 at the main stage of Jhiri. The show timings will be 7 pm on both these days. This was informed here today by the Natrang director Balwant Thakur at their Studio theatre in a press briefing. Natrang has been organizing the shows of Bawa Jitto since last five years at Jhiri Mela which have been witnessed by lakhs of people. The event of Natrang is supported by the District Administration, Jammu. This is a rarest opportunity for the audience to live through a six hundred year old saga in memory of which this festival is held every year since ages. He thanked the District development Commissioner Sanjeev Verma for extending full cooperation and support to this event of Natrang. Giving further details Balwant Thakur said that people from all over the North India throng the venue and this opportune moment has to be fully utilized by showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region through the presentation of the play Bawa Jitto. No where on this earth one can find this kind of devoted and captive audience, the kind of audience one gets at Jhiri. If its proper publicity and professional showcasing can be done, it can become an event of global attraction. In all these years, the presentation of Natrang has been the major attraction of the Jhiri Mela and has been instrumental in giving a new dimension and color to the whole festival. For Jhiri Mela, Natrang redevises the whole production which is presented with the help of a team of fifty skilled people including the top professionals of the field of light and sound. With the view to have its effective reach to the large number of audiences, the group uses video projections, and heavy sound systems. The lead role of Bawa Jitto is being played by famous television celebrity Arvind Anand whereas the role of Bua Gauri is being played by Juhi Singh-the girl who played the lead role in a Bollywood film ‘Jahan’. Scripted by Padamshree Prof Ram Nath Shastri, the play unfolds the life sketch of Dogra folk hero Bawa Jitto who sacrificed his life for a right. Traditionally this used to be sung by ‘Karkan’ narrative singers, who had preserved this pathetic tale since centuries. It was the year 1986 when Natrang took the initiative and transformed this folk narrative into a compelling theatrical venture. This play created a new history for the theatre of this region and has been staged over hundred times in all most all the major cities of the country. It was declared the best production of the year by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in 1987 and till date Natrang by putting its all earnest efforts and resources has kept this production alive despite lack of support and patronage.
