Interlocutors have walked into the Kashmiris' dangerous trap | Problem communal, not political | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 17: It would be only appropriate to mention here that the rate of unemployment in Jammu province is over 69 per cent. In contrast, the unemployment rate in Jammu province is less than 30 per cent. These are official figures. One can very easily verify these figures. These are available with the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. It should also be noted that there are nearly 3.5 lakh positions in the government and semi-government establishments, located in Kashmir. All these positions are the sole preserve of the people of Kashmir, minus the Kashmiri Hindus. The number of employees hailing from Jammu and working in Kashmir may not be even one thousand. The fact of the matter is that Kashmir is the only region in the whole of the country where the rate of employment is highest; more than 7 for every hundred persons, as against perhaps less then two in Jammu province. The number of employees in Jammu province is not even 1.5 lakh. Kashmir is the most prosperous region in the whole of the country in every respect. It is over-developed in terms of infrastructure, administrative units, road connectivity, power generation, healthcare facilities, irrigation facilities, agricultural development, technical and professional institutions and other educational institutions. They control trade, transport and industry. The per capita meat consumption in the Kashmir Valley is perhaps highest in the world. The per capita expenditure on woolen clothes in Kashmir is also perhaps highest in the world. Till date not a single Kashmiri has died of cold and hunger. There is not a single Kashmiri who is without a roof. Kashmir is the only region in the country where the per capita Central assistance is highest. These are only a few of the several such instances that serve to indicate the Kashmir's prosperity and Kashmiri domination and hegemony. And, still Radha Kumar and other interlocutors like Dileep Padgaonkar have the audacity to say that Kashmir is a political problem that required a political settlement. What more Kashmir and Kashmiri leaders want? If they want independence from India, it cannot be given because the grant of independence would mean another communal partition of the country. This is not acceptable. If they want autonomy or self-rule, it cannot be granted because the grant of autonomy or self-rule would mean negation of the very constitution of India. This is utterly unacceptable. If they want to join Pakistan, their demand cannot be accepted because the acceptance of their demand would mean victory of communalism over secularism and democracy. No sane person in India would allow anyone to divide India on the basis of two-nation theory. If the interlocutors are thinking in terms of giving more than what Kashmir and the Kashmiri leaders already have, then they are playing with dangerous tools; then they are playing the Pakistani game and the game of the vested interests and communal and separatist forces in the Kashmir Valley. They should forget that they would ever be able to force down the nation's throat their perverted ideas. Radha Kumar and her other colleagues would do well to accept the ground reality in Kashmir. The ground reality in Kashmir is, according to none other than former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha is that it is the politics of communalism that is being indulged in by the Kashmiri leadership that is responsible for all the troubles in Kashmir. The fundamental reason behind the Kashmir turmoil is communalism; the reason behind the unrest in Kashmir is the urge of the rank communalists in Kashmir for their merger with the theocratic, feudalistic and dictatorial Pakistan - Pakistan that is on the brink of collapse, Pakistan that has converted the life of the people in PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan into a veritable hell on earth, Pakistan that has become the epicenter of global terrorism and Pakistan that is being looked down upon by the civilized international community. It is time for everyone to call a spade a spade and cure the Kashmir's ailment. It is time for everyone to call the militants', Pakistan's and separatists' bluff. They are not the well-wishers of the Kashmiri Muslims. They are their enemies; they are only merchants of death and destruction; they are simply exploiting the name of Islam for worldly gains and for promoting their own vested interests and interests of Islamabad. If the Kashmiri Muslims want to live in peace and lead a dignified life, they have no other option but to rise in revolt against the separatists and extremists in Kashmir. It is also time for everyone to show the interlocutors their rightful place. They need to be told that they have no mandate to air views which have the potential of strengthening the separatists and communalists in Kashmir. And, why the way, who are they? (Concluded) |
