PDP's organizational structure collapsing …?
Tussle between old, new lot dilutes 'vibrancy' of party

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Nov 17: J&K's main opposition PDP which is also arch rival of ruling NC for whatever reasons might have put a check on, if not stopped its pro active role particularly against Abdullahs , its own house also doesn't seem to be in perfect order to call shots in fragile political atmosphere of the state. It is the tussle between old PDP and new PDP which is eating into the essence and spirit of the party. Has the party virtually lost the original essence and vibrancy on this account ….?
During the three month long unrest in Kashmir Valley, PDP was seen as the main offensive political power which would overtake the fragile rides of the coalition and hit the Abdullahs in harshest possible manner. The aggression and attack was at its peak. But that was all mostly through the hard hitting and strongly written statements. That aggressive tone and tenor is gradually being seen as ebbing, though focus of the criticism remains against the functioning of the government as seen in the statement issued in the name of patron Mufti Mohammad Syed two days back taking them on for huge ads to highlight contacts with public.
The high command comprising father daughter duo have been camping in winter capital. While Senior Mufti is here for quite some time, daughter arrived today from a brief trip to Dubai. The second line leadership (of the old PDP)has been conspicuous by its complete absence from the party affairs for a long time. Their task has been taken over by some faces from new PDP, who have often been identified as PPPs (post power products of the party). For some time it is these new leaders in whose name statements have been issued while as some old and original guards have maintained very low profile and distanced themselves from the new lot. In other words they have taken a backseat and the new lot is managing the show, whatever assigned to them by the high command.
Even though there is very thin dividing line between the old and new PDP lot, something drastically wrong has gone with the party and its role as major opposition party. Observers attribute it to internal structure and organizational hierarchy which has virtually collapsed. Though Muftis never defined a second line leadership ever since party came into existence, but the seniority of the leaders and their role in the initial years was self explanatory. But that has been overtaken a tide of new entrants , some from corporate sector, some borrowed and few from bureaucracy. What has apparently added to discomfiture of the original lot is the way Muftis are said to have facilitated not only entry but placement in the organizational structure.
While the original or old lot have chosen to remain almost in isolation, their complete absence from the scenario has raised many eyebrows in the cadres who are questioning and even disputing the role of some new faces. The support structure of the old guard for Muftis has been missing for some time and it is now new PDP faces who make occasional appearances through statements. In what has been seen as the 'politics of convenience' chosen by Muftis, the latter it appears , have failed to maintain balance between the old and new lot, their equilibrium visibly tilted towards the latter. That might have suited the Muftis for some valid reasons, but in the process the party's original face and vibrancy is being seen as getting diluted.
The vibrant and aggressive face of PDP from 1995 till 2008, is gradually getting diluted with dithering stands and wavering polity of the party which emerges with sudden volcanic presence one day and gets subdued with silence or changed course following days. Observers are also attributing the failing impact and present polity of party to the fact that most of the new faces do not gel well or match with the original philosophy and spirit of the party nor are they acceptable to cadres, workers down the line for their individual credibility. Is the borrowed leadership and the new faces doing harm than any good to the party is for Muftis to determine. But will this 'invisible' tussle cost the party in the long run is the moot question for them ponder over…?
