Thousands attend Eid prayers in festive Valley | Troops carrier torched in Anantnag, minor clash in Srinagar | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Hundreds of thousands of devout Muslims participated in special congregational prayers at mosques, Eidgahs, Imambaras in Kashmir valley today on occasion of the annual festival of Eid-ul-Azha. Unlike on Eid-ul-Fitr on September 11th, no major disturbance was reported even as a group of anti-India demonstrators torched a troops carrier in Anantnag and another group of the followers of separatist leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was dispersed by force after it clashed with Police in downtown Srinagar. Reports said that 40,000 to 50,000 Muslims participated in the mass prayers at Eidgah Grounds in downtown Srinagar. With most of the separatist leaders being under house arrest, cleric-politician Mirwaiz Umar Farooq failed to deliver his sermon at the prayers assembly. It was consequently handled by Imam-e-Hai who also led the prayers. According to these reports, over 30,000 Muslims performed their Eid prayers at Hazratbal. Thousands of people attended Eid prayers at hundreds of Valley's other Eidgahs, Imambaras and community mosques. Some of the mainstream political leaders and a large numbers of Government officers participated in the Eid prayers at the shrine-cum-mosque of Sayyed Sahib, in front of Srinagar headquarters of United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan, at Sonwar. Though reports said that the Eig prayers went on smoothly without any political intervention and demonstration in all parts of Kashmir valley, a group of people set on fire a Tata-407 vehicle of District Police Anantnag at the South Kashmir district headquarters. Under instructions from the Government, Police and paramilitary forces observed restraint and left the troops carrier for total destruction for fear of civilian casualties. Eyewitnesses told Early Times that minutes after the subversive act, Police fired volleys of gunfire in air. According to these reports, stone pelters were later successfully chased and forced to disperse. In downtown Srinagar, a group of people clashed with Police and forced their way to the cleric-politician Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's house. Mirwaiz was among six prominent separatist leaders who had been put under house arrest for fear of creating a law and order situation. Officials said that Police used teargas and baton charge and successfully managed to disperse the crowds at two places. They said that one among the crowd sustained injuries in the Police action. An official press release said that some miscreants assembled outside a local mosque at Janglat Mandi Anantnag, after offering the Eid Prayers, and intercepted a 407-Vechicle bearing registration number JK0S-3762 of District Police lines Anantnag, and set it ablaze. Police however exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the situation and avoided any mishap in the larger public interest . Situation in the area was later brought to normal, it added. "Some miscreants after the conclusion of Eid prayers made abortive attempts to disrupt peace near Deputy Commissioner's office-Anantnag, Nawakadal and Sekidafar areas in district Srinagar, by resorting to stone pelting on Police and other security forces deployments. Miscreants were chased away and situation in these areas was brought to normal" the official press release said.
