Kashmir issue is Qureshi's obsession | | | Whether it is a political conference, a religious congregation or even a sports event the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, does not hesitate touching the Kashmir issue. Even if he is invited to an international Conference on global warming Qureshi does not miss any opportunity in raising the Kashmir issue. His mind seems to be obsessed with the Kahmir problem. Over the years it has been seen that Pakistani leaders cherish referring to the Kashmir issue as a major dispute between India and Pakistan. And when compared to President, Asif Ali Zardari and the Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani Qureshi seems to be more vocal and consistent in his art of referring to the Kashmir issue. And if the indian intelligence agency reports are to be believed Qureshi is known to be under the influence of the ISI that has, during the last several decades, been in the forefront of those framing and implementing major policy decisions of Islamabad. The agency reports reveal that among all the cabiet ministers, including the Prime Minister, Qureshi is the most trusted man in the eyes of the top functionaries of the ISI. These very functionaries have been virtually dictating the agenda to Qureshi whenever he is to attend an international conference. It was the ISI that guided Qureshi to act insolently during the meeting of the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan in Islamabad in July last. Qureshi had virtually slighted Krishna during the meeting and during the joint press conference the two held. Of late Qureshi has been securing support from various countries for Pakistan's case on Kashmir. He has been pleading with the United Nations and the USA to intervene so that the Kashmir issue was resolved. And on Wednesday he told mediamen in Multan, after the Eidul Azha prayers, that Pakistan wanted a lasting solution to the Kashmir issue. In order to secure this solution he stated that Islamabad was trying to persuade New Delhi to reopen the channels of the composite dialogue so that the problem was settled and sorted out. Despite the fact that the American Government has conveyed to Islamabad that it was not willing to mediate between Pakistan and India on Kashmir Qureshi is the last man to give in. If he has demanded a lasting solution to the Kashmir issue has it ever bothered Qureshi to find out the reasons for India to suspend or choke the channels of composite dialogue? As Foreign Minister Qureshi is supposed to be well aware of the realities that prompted Delhi to suspend bilateral talks. And he is the right person to guide Zardari led Government to take measures that could encourage Delhi to reopen the channels of dialogue. New Delhi has,on many an occasions in the recent past, conveyed in clear terms to Islamabad its demands for the reopening of the channels of dialogue. But so far no action has been taken as far as India's demand for punshing the perpetrators of Mumbai terrorist attack is concerned. It has not taken adequate steps for dismantling the terror infrastructure that exists in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir. It has not taken steps to check infiltration of militants into Jammu and Kashmir and prevent the soil of Pakistan from being used for exporting terror to India. If it is the case why should Qureshi expect India to respond to his demands and suggestions. Possibly the ongoing street protests in Kashmir where people clash with police while demanding azadi has encouraged Qureshi to dictate terms to India. And when he raked up the Kashmir issue in Multan he must have come to know that after the Eid pr ayers groups ofpeople in Kashmir clashed with the police and indulged in arson. He is mistaken because these street protests may not be a permanent affair. It will be better for Pakistan to shun its anti-India bashing and start learning to live in peace with its immediate neighbour. |
