JAK RIF celebrate 11th reunion | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Udhampur, Nov 18: THE week-long celebrations of the 11th reunion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment begins today. The Regiment has fought many counter insurgency operations in the North East, Punjab, J&K and won many laurels. On July 6, 1981, 2Lt Pithawala while in command of a company column of17 JAK RIF was ordered to cordon and search Area Tekcham in Manipur and to capture armed extremists reported to be there. The operations resulted in the death of seven extremists and capture of a very large quantity of arms and amn. 2Lt CA Pithawala thus displayed bravery of the highest order and inspiring leadership and he was honoured with Ashok Chakra. The Regiment once again rewrote the history of high altitude warfare and carved a niche for itelf in the annals of military history during operation VIJAY. Display of sheer grit, determination and will power beyond comprehension, 13th Battalion the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles gave a bloody nose to the enemy in the Drass and Mushkoh valley sub sectors. The unit was instrumental in recapturing the strategic heights of Pt 5140 and Pt 4875. In honour of the exceptionally gallant and sterling performance from these battles, 13 JAK RIF was awarded the prestigious Unit Citation by the Chief of Army Staff and title of Bravest of the Brave. The Battalion also has a rare distinction of being the highest decorated Battalion of Operation VIJAY with two Param Vir Chakras won by Captain Vikram Batra and Rfn Sanjay Kumar (both posthumously).
