‘Azadi slogan revived in Azad's regime’
11/18/2010 11:23:06 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Nov 18: Former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad was sent to Jammu Kashmir to revive Congress. Initially he succeeded but failed at a crucial moment. He not only damaged Congress but also infused `new life in the freedom movement'. According to his critics, the Azadi slogan was revived in his regime. He is also accused of creating a wedge between Jammu and the Valley.
It was almost all over in 2008. Many separatists were also getting ready to contest the assembly elections. But then happened a miracle. Freedom movement gained momentum. We are thankful to former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad for infusing new life in the movement. This is how a renowned separatist (name withheld on request) traces the roots of the on-going agitation.
Elaborating his point, he said: "We are thankful to Azad. He did in twenty days what we could not do in twenty years. For two decades we tried our best to get people out on the streets but failed. Thanks to Azad Sahib, the goal was achieved with ease in June 2008."
The separatist leader meant to say that Azad had infused new life in the dying freedom movement'. Millions chanted the Azadi slogan at Pampore on the Rasam-e-Qul of slain separatist leader, Sheikh Abdul Aziz. A few days later around a million people assembled at Eidgah and TRC grounds. The international community had to focus attention Kashmir yet again. The after shocks of what is now called June uprising are still being felt. This is Azad's greatest `achievement' during his Jammu Kashmir sojourn.
The former Chief Minister was put to real test in the last months of the coalition rule. He mishandled the Amarnath land row. Kashmir erupted yet again and so did Jammu. Many a precious lives were lost. He failed the people of Jammu who had, contrary to precedents, opted not to register protest on his first day in the winter capital. For the first time in the past six decades the state of Jammu Kashmir got totally polarized. Azad created a wedge between Jammu region and the Valley. Pertinent to mention the people of the state lived in total harmony during the past twenty years. When militancy was at its peak in Kashmir, Jammu remained calm. But Azad's mishandling of the issue ignited the spark. The heat was felt on other side of the tunnel. Kashmiris responded by boycotting Jammu products. The demand for opening up of Jehlum Valley Road gained momentum much to the annoyance of the security agencies.
The separatists gained during Azad's regime what they had lost since 1996 elections. Can Azad deny this?
