Red Ribbon Express journey concludes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 19: It takes a strong army and multi-pronged attack to ward off a determined enemy. And an enemy such as HIV/AIDS requires all the awareness and prevention ammunition that can be summoned. In this regard the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation has conceived a unique and powerful idea to combat HIV/AIDS: a train that traverses over 10,000 km a year, covers 180 districts/halt stations, and hold programmes and activities in 43,200 villages. This is the Red Ribbon Express (RRE) Project, which is implemented by the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO). This national campaign promotes a multi-sectoral effort to bring HIV/AIDS into the mainstream of overall socio-economic development rather than regarding it as a medical/public health issue. The Red Ribbon Express or train itself comprises seven coaches, equipped with educational material, primarily on HIV/AIDS, interactive touch screens and 3-D models, PPTCT services in the context of RCH II, HIV-TB co-infection, an LCD projector and platform for folk performances, counseling cabins and two doctors’ cabins for providing counseling and syndromic treatment for STI and RTI cases, an office, dining area and pantry. This time there is also facility for HIV Testing along with counseling. Coach number Five has an auditorium where various “Master Trainers”, trained at Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi under GFATM Round – 7 component i.e Global Fund for HIV AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria presented detailed interactive sessions to various categories including Anganwari Workers, ASHA’s, Health Workers, youth Groups, teachers etc w.e.f 13th November 2010 to 19th November 2010 at Jammu as well as Udhampur Railway Stations. The master trainers included – Dr Arti Bakshi HOD Dept of Psychology University of Jammu, Dr Arun Sharma Medical Supdt Govt Hospital Sarwal, Dr Sufia and Dr Lakhvinder from Microbiology Dept GMC Jammu, Dr Rakesh Bahl Dept of PSM GMC Jammu, Dr Dushyant, Ms Ppallavi Thakur SPYM, Dr Kavita Suri from Jammu University and Dr S.B.Bakshi SKUAST. The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, & Malaria (GFATM) a foundation established under the laws of Switzerland (the "Global Fund") is a worldwide initiative. In India, this project supports National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) in prevention of AIDS. GFATM Round-7 focuses on primarily enhancing institutional and counselling capacities of training institutes in HIV/AIDS. This is for the first time that GFATM has partnered with institutions of higher learning who have established credentials in training and education of counsellors.
