EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 19: Railways have suffered a loss of Rupees 8.61 crore due to unrest in the Kashmir valley.
This was disclosed by Northern Railway General Manager S K Budhalakoti at a press conference here this afternoon.
The General Manager was in town on an annual inspection from Udhampur to Chakki Bank along with a team of civil engineers and senior Railway police officials.
''As the ongoing work of railway track remained suspended due to Kashmir situation, the department suffered a huge loss of Rs 8.61 crore,'' Budhalakoti said.
He, however, denied the migration of railway officials from the Valley and said, ''The employees have not migrated from Kashmir but due to unrest the work remained suspended. They have gone to their native places but now have resumed their duties.'' The GM said the work of Qazigund-Budgam railway track is in full swing and would soon be completed in a month, adding ''train to Katra will also reach by March 2012 as the engineers are working efficiently to meet any shortcomings, if any''
Railway stations of Jammu and Kashmir, which are considered to be sensitive areas across the country, would soon have integrated security set up on the pattern of Delhi railway station.
''Nearly 17 railway stations across Jammu and Kashmir including 15 in the Valley, one in Udhampur and one in Jammu will be developed along the pattern of Delhi Railway Station with raised security infrastructure,'' S K Budhalakoti said
Budhalakoti said these railway stations would have integrated security set up, which would include proper boundary wall, baggage scanners, sniffer dogs, X-ray machines, stickers and other security gadgets.
''Security scenario, basic facilities and safety of passengers is a priority of the Northern Railways and thus it becomes our moral responsibility to take care of them,'' the GM added.
Inspector General of Police, Railways, Naveen Aggarwal informed that pickets have been raised along the railway track with additional deployment of police and para-military force
