Up-gradation of facilities for pilgrims in progress: Dy CM

JAMMU, NOV 19 – Work on the roadmap to upgrade facilities for visiting pilgrims has already begun and all required support will be provided to promote pilgrim tourism in the state said , Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand after inaugurating 7-day long Jhiri Mela at Shama Chak , here today.
Jhiri Mela is held every year in memory of Baba Jitto and his daughter Bua Kodi. The Mela is attended by nearly 5 to 6 lakh devotees from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and other parts of northern India.
The inauguration function was attended by MLA, Marh, Sukhnandan Choudhary, MLA, Raipur-Domana Mr. Bharat Bhushan, MLA Indu Pawar, District Development Commissioner, Jammu Mr. Sanjeev Verma and senior officers of various departments.

Paying rich tribute to Baba Jitto, Mr. Tara Chand described him as a revolutionary farmer who fought against the feudal system of exploitation and for the cause of marginalized farmers.

Reiterating commitment of the government to provide all required infrastructure at pilgrim destinations across the state Deputy Chief Minister said that government is well aware of the problems of farmer community and is committed to provide succor to them, adding that from this year the process of procurement has been streamlined and FCI would directly procure paddy and wheat from the farmers.

He said the step would go a long way in freeing farmers from the clutches of exploiting traders and from now onwards they can get fair price for their produce, right at their door step.

Highlighting various projects which have been undertaken to upgrade infrastructure at the famous pilgrim destination of the region, the Deputy Chief Minister said over sixty lakh rupees have been spent on development works around shrine area. He said that work on the sarai building for pilgrims is apace and expected to be completed by coming march.

He said Rs. 4.63 crore double-laining project of Jhiri-Mishriwala road has been sanctioned, which was his commitment to the people of the area. He also passed instructions to the concerned authorities for completing the tendering process within fifteen days, so that work on the project can be stated soon.

Speaking on the occasion, the local MLAs thanked the deputy chief minister for fulfilling long pending demands of the people. They also presented various demands concerning infrastructure and other development needs of the area.

Responding to the demands put forth by the local representatives, Mr. Tara Chand assured that all genuine issues would be taken up at the right quarters. He said that keeping in view the increasing influx of devotes the demand for an additional sarai or extension of the present sarai would be looked into seriously.
