Another green feather added to J&K State: Forest Deptt | | | AGENCIES New Delhi Nov 19, 2010:- Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Awards ceremony was organized here today. Awards were instituted in 2008 to recognize the contribution of States/UTs in enhancing the percentage of forest and tree cover to achieve the national objective of 33% Forest Cover. The basis for selection of the awards is the States of Forests Report published biennially by the Forest Survey of India and awarded once in two years.
The ceremony was presided over by Dr. P.J.Dilip Kumar, Director General Forest and Special Secretary, Government of India with other dignitaries of the Officers of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
The IPVM Award to the States and UTs 2010 under the category ‘Big States’ has been awarded to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Commissioner /Secretary Forest Mr. Shantmanu received the award on behalf of the Government. The award is given in three categories viz. Big State, Small State and Union Territories. The states with geographical area of 80,000 sq. kms. or above are classified as Big States, the Jammu and Kashmir state falls in the Big state category. The award for the year 2010 has been given on the basis of state of Forest Reports 2005 and 2009, consists of cash prize of Rs. 8 lakhs a scroll and citation.
In the last four year the forest and tree cover has increased from 28322 sq. kms. to 29450 sq. kms. thus confirms the growth of forest and tree cover to the extend of 1128 sq. kms. in Jammu and Kashmir. On the occasion Dr. P.J.Dilip Kumar appreciated the constant efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir state in increasing the forest and tree coverage as the state has fallen second time in this category previously in the year of 2009 Jammu and Kashmir state was awarded with the prize money of Rs. 4 lakhs, a scroll and citation.
