Youth must run Panchayats across J&K: Farooq | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 19: Former Chief Minister and presently union minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah today advised party workers to actively participate in the upcoming elections for municipal bodies and Panchayats across Jammu and Kashmir. Urging party workers, Farooq said “You should actively take part in the Panchayat polls as these bodies have powers to transform developmental scenario of the state.” He said that honest and hardworking youth should come to the forefront and take responsibility of running Panchayats and implementing decisions of these bodies on ground. He said that by establishing Panchayats, state will be able to spend Rs 300 crore to Rs 400 crore annually on development works at the grassroots level. Panchayat elections were held in a truncated manner in 2001 and since then the new bodies could not be elected due to security problems. The state is losing over Rs 300 crore annually in centrally-sponsored schemes in the absence of Panchayati Raj system. Abdullah said that although Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has succeeded in getting a massive annual plan of Rs 6500 crore from the centre, developmental activities in the Valley were severely hit due to unrest over the past five months. “Shutdown badly affected development process. It has also crippled the economy while affecting education of the children," he added
