Traffic police agog, PDD unaware | Installation of CCTV cameras | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 19: Without taking Power department into the confidence, traffic police has on its own decided to install 82 closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras across Jammu city at different areas to streamline traffic, deal with traffic violators and control crime in the state at every vital point of the state. Sources said that traffic department’s plan is fraught with dangers because of frequent power cuts. Failure of power supply along with unscheduled power cuts in Jammu and its surrounding areas is a matter of routine. This has potential to throw CCTVs out of gear. Sources said that police department did not get assurance from PDD department to provide 24 hours electricity to these cameras. He stated that no alternative arrangements were made. Sources further said that similar 16 CCTV cameras have already been installed at crowded places and now traffic police has decided to handle traffic and anti-social activities with the help of (CCTV) Cameras. But without the availability of proper power supply, this seems to be a distant dream. It is pertinent to mention here that installation of CCTV cameras is likely to help in checking traffic violations to some extent alongside controlling traffic violations, criminal assaults and other related things. Police department has solved many cases of robbery, traffic violations with the help of CCTV cameras. Chief Engineer PDD Mohammad Qasim Chowdhary said that his office has not received any proposal from the traffic police department to provide uninterrupted power supply to CCTV cameras. If any request in this regard is made, it would be considered keeping in view public interest involved, added the Chief Engineer.
