EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 20: "NO one had ever imagined that "Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Varun Sahni, would become so vindictive and stoop so low that his administration would cancel the allotment in the Guest House at the nick of the time and jeopardize the efforts of the organizers of symposium." This is what is talked about in the University of Jammu these days.
The case in point is the "sudden decision" of the Sahni administration to "cancel the allotment of rooms in the university guest house." According to sources, the Indian Association of Solid State Chemists and Allied Scientists (ISCAS), University of Jammu, had booked around ten rooms in the university guest house for "very prominent scientists from outside the state," who were to participate in the three-day (Nov 18-20) National Symposium on New Trends in Materials Research. "The cancellation created serious difficulties for the organizers of the symposium and brought a bad name to the University of Jammu. The symposium was of international importance and those who had come to participate in it were scientists of international repute. The Sahni administration not only cancelled the allotment but also refused to acknowledge the letter written to him containing the request that the organizers would be very pleased if he could grace the inaugural ceremony as chief guest/guest of honour," sources also told. "The faculty members, barring those who do little academics but always remain in the good books of the inefficient and vindictive Vice-Chancellor because of their sycophancy, are feeling aghast and praying that the sooner Varun Sahni leaves the university the better it would be for the institution, the student community and the people of the Jammu province." This is the general feeling among the concerned faculty members and students.
There is also consensus among the teachers and students that "Sahni, like his predecessor Amitabh Mattoo, is a curse for the university", that "Sahni, like his predecessor, has been indulging in nepotism and running the university with the help of those whom Amitabh Mattoo had cultivated using unfair means to promote his personal agenda and accommodate undesirable elements", that the "university administration under Sahni has been favouring only those who are close to certain officials in the administration block and those close to corridors of power", and that "those who are efficient are being systematically sidelined and sycophants and inefficiency are being rewarded."
Ask any genuine faculty member about the credentials and abilities of Varun Sahni, his/her reply would be: "Remove this incompetent man from the JNU, send him back to the JNU and appoint a local person as Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University." Ask any genuine student if Varun Sahni has done anything to improve the education standards and reform the examination system and examination section, his/her answer would be: "Things have further deteriorated; students have been suffering; results are being delayed; corrupt practices have become order of the day." Ask any concerned faculty member if the university administration is discharging its duties efficiently, he/she would say in no time that "there exists no administration worth its name, no one in the administration understands anything, no one can even write, administration block has become den of intrigues, with senior officials misusing their position and securing employment for their sons, daughter, wives, sisters, brothers and other close relatives, it is all bhai bhatijabad and Mattoo has gone back but replaced by a person who has been under the influence of those whom Mattoo had give out-of-turn promotions and whom he had rewarded with prestigious positions."
If what the concerned faculty members have been saying is correct, then it can be said that things in the Jammu University have deteriorated to the extent where is has become impossible to retrieve the situation and put the university back on the rails. That things have worsened could be seen from the fact that the Sahni administration, according to reliable sources, cancelled the allotment on the spurious plea that the symposium was not a university affair." How could the irresponsible Sahni administration take such a view when ISCAS is an integral part of the University?
It is time for the authorities to intervene and save the Jammu University from the "JNU liabilities." Let the Jammu University have a local Vice-Chancellor. The outsiders have only destroyed this premier educational institution in the state. They only come to Jammu, exploit their position, create lobbies and indulge in the British policy of divide and rule and further their own vested interests and the interests of those few who are pliable, rank opportunists, intriguers and sycophants.
