KISHTWAR/JAMMU, Nov 20:
While security forces last night killed a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative in a gunbattle at Nagnigad in Keshwan, Kishtwar, the angry people damaged a police post and stoned cops, alleging that the encounter was "fake".
In stone-pelting, a Sub-Inspector (SI) and at least nine others sustained wounds, police sources said.
Acting on a tip-off about the presence of LeT district commander Habib Gujjar alias Salman and his three to four accomplices at Nagnigad, a joint column of police and army rushed to the village late last night.
While the jawans were laying a cordon around the area where the militants were suspected to be, they came under heavy fire at about 1 am, sources said.
In a bid to flee the spot, the militants also threw grenades towards the jawans, but these missed the target and exploded in noman's land, the sources added. ire was returned. In the exchange of fire, that lasted over three hours, the jawans shot dead one of them while the others managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
The dead was identified as Mohammad Shafi Gujjar, son of Fazal Din Gujjar of Nagnigad. Sources said one pistol, one grenade and one wireless set were recovered from him. Shafi was real uncle of Habib Gujjar had been working for LeT
militants since long, according to SSP, Kishtwar, Dr Haseeb Mughal. He was also alleged to be providing LeT militants information about movement of troops, besides supplying them essential daily use items.
He said when some locals were this morning taken to the encounter site to identify the body, some LeT sympathisers motivated villagers to hold an anti-police protest.
During protest, people also raised pro-Azadi and anti-India slogans.
The irate mob later gathered at the eidgah and attacked the Nagnigad police post, causing it extensive damage. They also resorted to stone-pelting, injuring a SI, an army Subedar
and eight others. All were hospitalised. They refused to bury Shafi, demanding action against those "involved in his killing. They claimed that Shafi was not a militant.
They claimed that in police firing, Maneer, son of Hussain, and Abdul Gani, son of Taj Din, were also wounded.
When the mob started marching towards Kishtwar town, police foiled their attempt. The ding-dong battle between the two sides continued till late this evening.
Senior police officers, who later reached the spot, pacified the protesters, who then agreed to bury the body. Other details were awaited. Sources, however, said a massive hunt was on in the nagnigad forests in search for Habib Gujjar and his accomplices.
