Reservation not charity but right of Gujjars | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 21: Maintaining that reservation granted to Gujjars-Bakerwals community in Jammu and Kashmir under Scheduled Tribe category is not a ‘charity but was a right of tribe’, the experts today impressed upon younger generation of tribals to work hard for achieving highest successes in all walks of life without banking upon ‘quotas’ alone. Addressing a group of Gujjar youths who have been preparing to compete different All India and State level exams including IAS and KAS, Dr. Javaid Rahi, Secretary , Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation said that the concept of reservation was based on proportion of total population of a community fall under a particular category whereby a percentage of posts are reserved in employment, promotion, Assemblies and Parliament in order to mitigate backwardness of the socially and educationally backward communities. Dr.Rahi asserted upon new generation to work vigorously for strengthening of Tribal status and identity but at the some time they were asked to not to bank upon reservation or quotas only. He said although tribals including Gujjars are historically oppressed and denied equal opportunity in society and were thus under-represented in nation-building activities but now it’s a time to prove our-selves as a forceful and vibrant identity of India. He impressed upon tribal youths to struggle hard and not to depend upon 10% quota in State and 7.5% in central jobs under scheduled tribe category but to think above of all this. He asked the youth to try their luck in private sector or outside country too. Zabeer Bajad ,General Secretary , J&K Tribal United Forum who is also a senior scientist while addressing the youth told that our younger generation should focus on new system of attaining knowledge through various resources including internet and new technology.
