Marriage season on, traffic congestion in city again | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, November 21: With marriage season going on in full bloom, the city residents are facing many hardships because of traffic congestion and large number of ‘shamianas ‘ (tents) pitched in the middle of the roads, parks and inside lanes. In majority of cases, these tents remain pitched for several days and even local police authorities fail to discipline them --all in the name of golden handshake behind the curtains. In addition to this several community halls located in residential areas are adding to the miseries of the local residents living in the vicinity as event organisers seldom stick to DJ timings and loud numbers are belted out past stipulated deadlines. The situation is even grim in residential colonies where most of the families use open spaces outside their houses to pitch tents and then it is free for all without any check. Visit any residential colony or old city area and you will come across multi coloured tents pitched outside their houses to host guests thereby blocking passage for regular commuters and all others using the route for their day to day activity. In some cases even the business interests of shopkeepers in the area are worst affected as they had no remain mute spectator to the machinations of the organisers of the event and cannot open their mouth or even complain to avoid reprimand. The authorities concerned don’t pay any heed to host of other issues related to the organisation of such functions in the open places. Even the local sweepers refuse to clear the garbage till the time they get something in return for the extra effort and no one in the official machinery is ready to take responsibility to avoid any inconvenience afterwards. Issues such as traffic congestion, security concerns and lighting also gets ignored and public health, safety and security is compromised by the hosts.
