Governor inaugurates Science Camp for INSPIRE Internship at JU | Emphasizes on creating vast corpus of scientists, technocrats | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, NOV 21 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has emphasized the need for creating a vast corpus of scientists and technocrats to resolve the various problems and taking the country forward on the path of progress and prosperity. The Governor, as Chief Guest, was inaugurating the 5-day Science Camp for “Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)” Internship Component at the University of Jammu here today. This Science Camp has been organized by the Postgraduate Department of Geology, University of Jammu and sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India under its INSPIRE Programme. The Governor, while dwelling on the laudable contribution of science and technology in the economic development of the country in the past decades, stressed the need for focusing on enhancing employability of the youth by their skill upgradation, ensuring availability of safe drinking water, provision of affordable housing, increasing productivity and production of agriculture, horticulture, dairy, poultry, fodder, besides conservation of environment, ecology and biodiversity, by optimally utilizing the scientific and technological advancements. The Governor recalling the sound foundation laid by the first Prime Minister of the country, late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, said that he had a great vision and set up a number of engineering and medical colleges, IITs and other institutions for promotion of science and technology for the speedy development of the country on modern lines. Referring to the INSPIRE Programme, the Governor said that the science teachers from various schools should also be invited to participate at these Science Camps along with their students. He thanked the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for launching this useful project, which aims at providing excellent opportunity and assuring a good future in science to the bright students. The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, congratulated the students for participating in this Science Camp, adding that teaching and learning of science enhances the spirit of enquiry, besides providing excellent career opportunities. The Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Varun Sahni, congratulating the participating students said that the study of science offers excellent career opportunities and hoped that increasing number of the participants would opt for this study. He said that the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has launched many innovative programmes and scholarship schemes upto the post-Ph.D. level and the students can benefit from these schemes in a big way. He also dwelt on the initiatives underway for strengthening infrastructure for teaching and research in science in the various colleges in the State and the support extended by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India for the purpose. The Advisor, Science and Engineering Council, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, Dr. A. Mukhopadhya, gave details of the various programmes launched by the Department for attracting the students to study science and follow it by research. He added that this is one of the innovative programmes launched by the Department of Science and Technology for attraction of talent to science with a view to communicate to the youth of the country the excitement of creative pursuit of science. This is also aimed to attract talent to the study of science at an early age and build the required critical human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the Science and Technology system and R&D base, he added. Earlier, in his welcome address, the Coordinator, INSPIRE Programme, Prof. M. A. Malik, spoke about the aims and objects of organizing the INSPIRE Science Camps. The Associate Professor, Department of Geology, University of Jammu, Dr. Pankaj Srivastav, presented a Vote of Thanks. The Registrar, Jammu University, Dr. P. S. Pathania, Deans of various Faculties, Heads of the Departments, Faculty members, Mentors, renowned Scientists, science students of the various schools of Jammu Division and teachers were present on the occasion.
