Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 21: Last week former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah said “accidental leaders had made lives of people difficult in Jammu Kashmir.” He did not name anybody but apparently he was referring to Syed Ali Geelani.
Differences with Geelani notwithstanding, nobody can say he has become a leader accidently. Dr Farooq knows it better than anybody else. Geelani has been in politics for more than six decades and has emerged as the most popular leader in Kashmir. Here an attempt is not being made to glorify Geelani. On the contrary, Dr Farooq’s statement has provided an opportunity to make a mention of those who were imposed upon this state.
In 1981, Sher-e-Kashmir held a massive convention of National Conference in the erstwhile Hazuri Bagh. It was in this rally that Dr Farooq’s coronation took place. He was imposed upon a gullible people. To give a democratic tinge to a total autocratic exercise, Sher-e-Kashmir asked the people if Dr Farooq was acceptable to them. The people said Zaroor and that was it.
Dr Farooq held a similar function to impose his son, Omar Abdullah on the people a few years ago. Again the people said Zaroor. On both the occasions no efforts were made to find more suitable candidates for the NC presidentship.
National Conference claims it fought against autocratic Dogra rule. But what has it been promoting? Both Sher-e-Kashmir and Dr Farooq Abdullah promoted family rule.
Two months ago there was talk of change of NC leadership. People expected a person not linked to the Sheikh family as head of the organization. Dr Farooq rushed from New Delhi to make things clear. “The presidentship of National Conference shall remain in the Sheikh family”, he announced while addressing a handful of NC members who had been herded to his Gupkar residence.
The people of Jammu Kashmir hate accidental leaders. Nobody in this state likes to be taken for a ride by a person who became a leader by accident. But have they any reason to like those who have been imposed on them?
