| Workshop on capacity building of women managers in higher education organised | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU: A week-long UGC sponsored workshop on “Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education” was organised by Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies at the MIER College of Education . The workshop was inaugurated by Sham Lal Sharma, Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture. The dignitaries present on the occasion included the Member National Consultative Committee and Core Group Resource Person North West Region Dr. Pam Rajput, the Member National Consultative Committee and Core Group Resource Person South West Region Prof. Jaya Indiresan, Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Director Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu and Regional Coordinator North West Region. Dr. Arun K Gupta, Chairman MIER Group of Institutions, a renowned educationist as Guest of Honour and Dr. Renu Gupta, Director Smt. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women’s Studies. Besides this Dr. Nilofer Khan, Sub Regional Coordinator would also be attending the workshop along with key associate trainers from Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to transact Manuals and take technical sessions with the participants, the methodology of which will be participatory. He congratulated Dr. Arun K.Gupta, Chairman MIER Group of Institutions and Dr. Renu Gupta, Director Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies on the occasion and hoped for result oriented fruitful deliberations of far reaching consequences during the week long participation by the enlightened luminaries from various states. He appreciated the role of the UGC to have a programme of empowering the women and appreciated the role of MIER for being fully involved in providing proper training to women. Prof .Jaya Indiresan, a known champion of women empowerment both as a prolific writer and practical orator enthralled the audience by her views. According to her the process of change should begin with the self and from women themselves but changes have to be made in other contexts like the family and society which culturally determine her role in a stereotyped mould. Dr Arun. K Gupta, Chairman MIER Group of Institutions and the Guest of Honour on this occasion enlightened the gathering of distinguished educationists from the different parts of the country including J&K, Punjab, Himachal and Chandigarh by highlighting the need for creating gender friendly institutions in which women can grow and develop by upgrading their knowledge, skills and managerial capabilities. He revealed that around 70% of the intake of students at the MIER in the different streams of Engineering, B.Ed, M.Ed and Ph.D programmes are female students. Therefore, it is imperative to organize capacity building programmes for them. For empowering he said there is a great need for sensitizing men and hoped that such programmes would also be planned for the sensitization of men folk. He appreciated the efforts of Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies for organising a second workshop of this kind successfully. Dr. Renu Gupta, Director , Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies and the Principal of MIER College of Education extended her warm welcome to the Chief Guest, all the distinguished guests and the participants from the J&K State and the other states of India. On this occasion, a beautiful action song ‘Jago-Jago’ on women empowerment was also presented by the students of the MIER College which enthralled the audience. Dr Poonam Dhawan the regional coordinator also dwelt deep into the rationale of the workshop. The inaugural function concluded with a ‘Vote of Thanks’ by Prof. Ira Bhan of the MIER College of Education, Jammu. -.-
