Jammu NOV 22: Career oriented approach, erratic lifestyle, competitive times and a blind race to be always on top; all these traits lead a person to depression, a state of mind where a human being develops different sorts of apprehensions and, if not treated in time, may
prove fatal.
Depression is the most common problem, in fact, basic cause of most of the psychiatric problems. In the past two decades, depression has emerged as one of the most commonly found problem among people.
Eight out of the ten –people are confronted with the problem of depression in the present times. Depression, most common psychiatric problem is found especially among the women, the youngsters and the old people, though the reasons for the problem in different age groups are different but the genesis of the problem are almost the
same.
Mood swings, loss of interest in routine work, feeling low at times, forgetfulness, unfound apprehensions, decreased confidence are some of the common symptoms of depression.
Unlike other parts of the country, there has been unprecedented surge in the cases of depression in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the wake of militancy unleashed two decades ago, which has taken its toll- more in the valley and on a lesser scale in Jammu division that too is under its grip owing to one or the other reason. The forced migration
of a particular segment of population due to security reasons has given rise in the cases of depression in Jammu.
“There has been a steep increase in the cases of depression in Jammu uring the past few years. Apart from traumatic feelings in a ection of migratory population, various other reasons like change in he life style, food habits and a hectic stressed daily schedule with
an urge to achieve more, has led to increased cases of depression.
Unemployment, competition in studies, pressure of future adjustments, arental expectations are some other reasons which has resulted in the normous increase in the depression cases in the city”, observes Dr Jagdish Thappa of psychiatric department of Jammu Medical College.
As per the Head of the Department, more than 200 patients are seeking onsultation in the psychiatry out-patient department in Jammu. “Most of the psychiatric patients turn out to be cases of depression, as it is the most commonly faced problem. As the state has undergone so many problems like militancy, mass migration and the related
maladies, the psychiatric problems have increased manifold. Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder is the most common malady among the people, who had migrated or who still are living in the militancy infestedareas. Illusion disorder is the third most prevalent disorder”, says Dr Thappa. He adds that the number of the psychiatric cases among the paramilitary forces and the security personal has also increased ignificantly.
A high police official, who has been associated with anti-militancy operations, says that stressful duty hours, staying away from longer durations are the main causes of depression among the security personnel who are deployed at most vulnerable places, much away from their homes.
“Only a decade ago, hardly anyone from the belt force would turn up for psychiatric consultation. But the number has increased enormously in the past few years. The cultural difference, different ethnicity, language problem are some other reasons for the security personnel to go into depression. Some of them develop suicidal tendencies and
that has led to the increased rate of the suicides in the paramilitary forces”, says Dr Thappa.

Notwithstanding the growth in such cases, al very few patients seek medical help. The number of the patients are quite high but most of the times they go unnoticed as they remain untreated some due to the lack of awareness and some due to the fear of getting ignored by the society.
“There are people who consider that mental ailments are not curable. They fall prey to quakes and tantriks. However, if proper awareness is generated, the malady can be treated. Timely medication and the family support surely can help a per on to get back to normal life. Even environment can also help a lot to these patients”, says doctor.
“Though there are patients of every age group but in Jammu, the people who are facing the depression problem are mostly in the age group of 15-25 years. I think generally more expectations lead to such condition. At times, these cases remain unnoticed due to variety of reasons”, says Dr Thappa.
“But it is a totally curable problem. Timely and proper medication along with family support is required for a patient to overcome.
Apart from this, psychotherapy helps a lot in such cases,” says Dr Thappa.
The social scientists feel that society at a large and the immediate family members have a great role to check this malady timely. If this s not done, it may be a big catastrophe for a sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir.
