EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 22: A group of 20 students from the Bandipore district, back from their visit to various places of historical and cultural importance in the southern parts of the country, met the Governor, N N Vohra, at Raj Bhavan here this evening and shared with him their experience during this tour. The students were accompanied by one of their teachers and the Army officers who had been with them on the tour.
During their 18-day tour, organized by the Army’s 3rd Battalion, Madras Regiment under Sadbhavana Programme-2010, these students visited Udhampur, Jammu, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari. The tour was flagged-off from Bandipore on November 7 and will conclude on 24th of this month.
Interacting with the children, the Governor enquired from them about the places they visited and the experience gained during the tour. They said that it was a lifetime opportunity for them to have received exposure to various places of educational, scientific, historical and cultural interests in the country. For most of the students, it was their first visit to any place outside Jammu and Kashmir. The children, studying in the 8th to 11th classes, were all praise for the Army for organizing this national integration-cum-educational tour under Sadbhavna Programme.
The students said that in Thiruvananthapuram they called on the Kerala Governor, R S Gawai at Raj Bhavan and had tea with him. They also visited Napier Museum, Veli Tourist Village, Zoological History Museum, Zoo, Botanical Garden, Vovalam Beach, East Fort Palaces, ISRO Station and other places of interest. Similarly, at Kanyakumari, they had visited Thakula Palace, Vivekananda Rock and other places of historical interest.
The Governor presented gifts to the students and wished them a bright future. He asked Maj Pranab Nair and other accompanying Army personnel to provide photo albums to the children as a memorabilia of their tour, and besides organize an Essay Writing Competition, on their experience. The Governor agreed to suitably reward the three students, whose essays are found to be the best.
The Principal Secretary to the Governor, R K Goyal, was present on the occasion.
