| Turmoil halts development of Valley, contractors abandon works | | | aSHWANI EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 22: All the developmental activities in Kashmir Valley in general and Capital city of Srinagar in particular are at standstill due to ongoing turmoil in Kashmir. The contractors and other agencies which had been allotted the construction of roads and drainage system have abandoned the work after the strike hit the Valley in June this year. According to sources the maximum roads in Sringar city and other major towns are in dilapidated condition as contractors abandoned the work in June this year. Fearing threat to their lives, men and machinery the contractors at many places after digging the roads did not undertake their reconstruction, sources added. Sources said the constant strike during last five months while brining the normal life to a grinding half has affected the development totally resulting in a lot of resentment among the masses who accuse the separatists and militants for the same. Almost all roads in interior Srinagar city have been dug and they are not worth for plying of vehicles. The people have been put to many hardships owing to bad condition of the roads but the authorities are unable to solve the problem as the separatists still rule the roost, sources added. The city roads from Lal Bazar to Soura Medical Institute via Eidgah are in shambles. The residents of the area said that the entire road has been dug six months back but later the work was abandoned due to ongoing turmoil. It is not the only city roads which are in shambles but the condition of other interior roads in Srinagar city is also the same, said, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Zargar of Down Town Srinagar. He said for drainage system of the surrounding colonies the Dal Development Authority (DDA) undertook the digging work over six months back but later the work was stopped due to strike and separatists threat. The unauthorized construction was the another problem that surfaced in Kashmir Valley due to turmoil. New houses, shopping complexes and other structures have been constructed unabated during the turmoil period as there was no check of the authorities for the same. During the turmoil period the black marketing of the essential commodities was on peak and the hoarders had the field day under the noose of so called champions of Azadi, said Abdul Rehman Najar of Zaina Kadal, Srinagar The Down Town is in worst condition thanks to the separatists and anti national elements, he said, adding the authorities are ready to solve the grievances of the masses but they are helpless as contractors and agencies which have undertaken the construction of civil works in various parts of the Valley are unwilling to resume the work due to threat from urchins. It is not the Government but the separatists and anti social elements which are responsible for delaying in the development works in Valley, said Mohammed Yousf a civil contractor. The separatists and militants have damaged the infrastructure of the state after torching schools, hospitals, damaging bridges and other Government buildings. And when the Government has taken up the reconstruction of these structures in hand, the separatists by giving the call of constant strike have created impediments in this process, he added. He said later these people make a hue and cry that the Valley is being neglected in developmental field forgetting that instead of blaming others they are themselves responsible for the same. |
