Jammu better against Kashmir in hockey, handball | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 23: Jammu boys proved to be better against their counterparts from Kashmir after they made it a clean sweep in inter-division hockey and handball competitions held at different venues, here today under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS). In under-17 boys’ handball, Jammu Division defeated Kashmir Division 17-08 making it a one-sided contest. Jammu won the three-match series 2-0 held at Mini Stadium, Parade here. In today’s second match, Happy Manhas was highest scorer from Jammu with five goals while Puneet Kumar contributed four and Pankaj Chander added three. Meanwhile, in under-14 hockey too Jammu boys beat Kashmir Division in similar fashion taking away the series 2-0. In the second match played today at K K Hakhu Stadium, here, Jammu outplayed Kashmir 4-1 in a one-sided contest. Ishfaq Hussain scored two goals while Ramandeep Singh and Sunil Sharma contributed one each. From Kashmir Division, Harminder Singh reduced the margin.
Teams finalised: After holding the inter-division under-14 hockey and under-17 handball tournaments, the selection committees of DYSS finalized the teams for the forthcoming National School Games. However, the teams were not made public by the officers concerned.
Selection committee ignored: Challenging the authority of the selection committee, the Deputy Director (Activity) of the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), Gulshan Ara today ordered the handball teams to replay their second match allegedly in an attempt to accommodate some more boys from Kashmir valley in the final selected team. One of the members of the selection committee, the Deputy Director arrived at the venue when second match of the three-match series was already won by Jammu with big margin and the selectors had finalized the team. In fact, the officer arrived at the venue to look into the allegations of teacher incharge from Kashmir that selection was not fair with Jammu getting more berths. To the dismay of these `biased’ teachers from valley, Jammu again won with heavy margin. Now, left with no other option to accept the already selected team, the Deputy Director approved the list and left the venue in dejection. “It was nothing but an attempt to show their domination on selectors from Jammu. We want to make it clear to everyone that we never suppress the talent,” upset over the action of Deputy Director a senior officer of DYSS told SAN pleading anonymity.
