Family refuses to digest police theory, alleging his was a "staged encounter"

JAMMU, Nov 23: Two days after police said they had killed Rakesh Singh Giri in an encounter near Satyam Resorts here, the victim's family and relatives today vehemently refuted police claim, alleging he was "murdered" in a staged encounter.
This serious allegation against police was levelled by them during their anti-police protests at RS Pura and Kunjwani. Disputing the police claim that he was killed in an encounter, agitated family members said they would approach NHRC and SHRC with a complaint against police in this regard.
They also demanded a CBI probe into the incident to bring the facts to light. Local MLA Gharu Ram and ex-municipal committee chairman, RS Pura, Bhushan Dogra also assured the family to raise the issue at the appropriate platform.
The last rites on Giri's body could not be performed yesterday as they got it late from the GMC hospital. Today, the family kept the body outside their home in ward No 4 of RS Pura and held a strong anti-police demonstration.
They alleged that Giri, who was picked up by police two days before his "fake" encounter, had actually died in police torture. They said Giri belonged to a poor family and had he been a contract killer, their financial health would have been better.
Additional police personnel had been sent to R S Pura to deal with the situation in case Giri's family members and relatives resorted to violence.
When armed cops forced them to lift their dharna, they moved to the nearby Daljit Chowk along with the body and held a demonstration there. After protesting for some time at Daljit Chowk, they moved towards Purmandal to consign the body to flames, but stopped at Kunjwani and tried to block vehicular movement as part of their protest.
As the situation became tense, a possee of policemen arrived on the scene and forced them to vacate the area. Giri's body was then taken to Purmandal where last rites were performed on it amid tight police security.
On Sunday evening, police claimed to have killed Giri in an encounter and injured his accomplice Yudhvir Singh alias Bablu, who was undergoing treatment at the GMC hospital.
They were alleged to have been tasked to kill witnesses in the Amandeep murder case by Choudhary Nagar Singh alias Nago on the day of the encounter. Police had claimed that the conspiracy to killed witnesses, including ex-MLC Depinder Kour, was hatched by Nago in the Kote-Bhalwal jail.
Jail authorities, however, refused the police claim, saying the encounter victim was never lodged there. Sources said he was lodged in the district jail at Ambphalla in PSA from May 16, 2009, to September 13, 2010.Police seem to have landed in trouble over the issue.
