‘Omar needs to change his advisors’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 23: But for his advisors, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah would have performed better. This is what the political circles believe. Omar has a right to differ but as they say "vox populi vox dee" (voice of people is voice of God), he needs to give a serious thought to replacing his advisors. Omar's political advisor, Davinder Singh Rana is a renowned and successful businessman but a new entrant into politics. The Chief Minister of a troubled state must have an experienced political advisor. Rana, on the contrary does not know much about politics his claims to the contrary notwithstanding. Rana almost caused cracks in the National Conference. Seniors like Ali Muhammad Sagar and Rahim Rather, according to insiders do not get the respect they deserve. A dismayed Rather even did not respond to Chief Minister's phone calls for quite some time. The National Conference has denied this but people who want to end Rana's growing influence on the Chief Minister corroborate this. During early days of Omar's regime, the scribes could get him on his cell phone. The Chief Minister even responded to SMS of journalists. But then came a time when Omar went for media gag. Scribes were beaten and circulation of newspapers banned. Most of the scribes see Rana's hand in the onslaught on the fourth estate. Omar Abdullah has urged the police and para-military forces to exercise restraint. Had this statement come in June the situation would have been different. Rana, in his capacity as the political advisor of the Chief Minister talked to India Today in August. He said: "We have directed the police to deal sternly with the protesters." Earlier, Omar sought additional troops from New Delhi to contain the protests. He even sought army's held. The army held a flag march in the summer capital. What were the Chief Minister's advisors doing then? Mubarak Gul happens to be the other advisor of the Chief Minister. He also heads the grievance cell. He had been entrusted the job of listening to the woes of the people at his Church Lane office. Gul has rarely been seen in his office. People close to National Conference believe New Delhi would not have talked about `trust deficit' and governance deficit' had Gul remained present in his office during the agitation. "Chief Minister cannot reach the people especially in a state of emergency. Mubarak Gul was assigned the job of meeting the people but he failed the Chief Minister and National Conference", they said. |
