| BJP likely to contest Panchayat poll on non-party basis | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 24 The state unit of the BJP has decided to contest the ensuing Panchayat lections even without securing adoption of 73rd and 74th amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act. This decision has been taken despite a suggestion given by the BJP leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta that if the ruling coalition did not introduce the amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act the party should boycott the election. Party sources said that since the BJP leadership hopes to r eap rich harvest in the Panchayat elections it has opted for contesting the election .It has even agreed to contest the poll on non-party basis when initially it was for fighting the election on party basis. The demand for fielding the candidates in the ensuing Panchayat poll was the outcome of its belief that since both the National Conference and the Congress would be mauled in the election. A senior BJP leader said that "we will field candidates but without a tag of their being people from the BJP." Asked what was the reason for this change, he said "there was no definite reason for it but we do not want to boycott the poll as we do not want to give a cakewalk to NC and the Congress." He said that there was nothing new in the Government decision to hold the poll on a non-party basis because the previous lection too had been held on a non-party decision. But some staunch BJP supporters small a secret nexus between the BJP ledership and the National Conference. They said the party should have listened to Prof.Gupta's suggestion.
