| Tension grips Surankote after clash leads to ransacking, looting of shops | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU Nov 24: Tension today gripped Surankote town of Poonch after a clash over the sale of SIMs led to the ransacking and looting of at least three shops by some miscreants. Two to three youth came to the mobile of shop of Sanjay Sharma in Surankote town at about 2 pm to purchase two SIMs of Airtel company from him. Police sources said there were heated exchanges between the two sides over some minor issue following which the shopkeeper refused to sell them SIMs. The two sides then manhandled each other, the sources added, saying the youth later fled the spot. The youth, who belonged to the majority community, again came to the shop after some time along with their supporters and ransacked the mobile shop and allegedly looted mobile phone sets and other items from there. They also resorted to stone pelting and forced their entry into Satish Studio and Rakesh Hardware and Bartan Store. Sources said they ransacked these shops and looted some items from there too. Some more majority community members joined them later and forced the closure of shops. However, on the intervention of DSP Perbeet Singh, shopkeepers agreed to open their shops. The trouble continued in the town for nearly three hours, the sources added. Sources said the miscreants broke the photostate machine in Satish Studio. To defuse the situation, the elders from both the communities later held a meeting. Though police asked them to amicably sort out the issue, the two sides said they would register FIR against each other. Meanwhile, sanatan dharam sabha, Poonch, president Manjit Kumar has urged the government to ensure security of minorities at Surankote. |
