| Omar talks of making police people-friendly force, does not make mention of "mysterious" encounter killing | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 24: Even as chief minister Omar Abdullah today talked of making J&K police a people-friendly force, he did not utter a word on the "mysterious" encounter killing of Rakesh Singh Giri near Satyam Resorts here Sunday last. How could an unclear police force be people-friendly? Their post-encounter behaviour is somewhat awkward and shows that they are not in a mood to discuss the incident anymore. They are so unclear that they did not even bother to deny the charge of Giri's family that he was allegedly murdered in a staged encounter. Police denial, supported with the "genuine" encounter details, was must. It has been felt that despite their hundreds of meets held with public in the past, police could not become people-friendly. They are allegedly faced with sex scams, found involved in murder cases, custodial killings, land grabbings, misuse of official position and many other heinous crimes. Under such situations, it would not be wrong to say police are fast losing their image of a public protector. So, how could people befriend them? Omar needs to know that construction of modern police stations and creating latest infrastructure for cops won't change the "rotten" mindset in the police force. There was an urgent need to post those in police stations and as district heads who had a proven track record and were mature enough to deal with the public. If he really wants to transform the police force, he should try to evolve a system where the real protectors of public should get a chance to work and not the killers. The chief minister may not like to personally intervene in the Giri's killing knowing that he was a criminal in police records. But if his was a fake encounter killing, as alleged by his family, Omar's intervention would help the sufferers to get justice. Addressing a meeting of senior police officers, he underlined the need for making police a modern and professional force in the country to render best service to the people. He was right when he emphasised the need for cordial police-public ties to maintain peace and tranquility in the state, but he did not make a mention of how it was possible with the present set of police officers in some districts. During video conferencing with police district superintendents, he discussed matters raised by them as regards the creation and upgradation of police stations. He said police should be recognized as friends of people and in this direction, the department had to make innovative and befitting efforts. The meeting was also attended by DGP Kuldeep Khuda, principal secretary (Home) BR Sharma, Omar's principal secretary BB Vyas and other senior officers. |
