Female feticide still a common place practice in Jammu | | | Vaibhavi Chandel EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 25: Pre natal sex determination and killing of the fetus with female embryos is a common place practice in the civilized society also, despite the bigger claims of gender equality always being the number one promo of the developed civilization. Jammu in this regard is also no exception to this. The ever declining sex ratio is an alarming call for the country. All the efforts of the state government to control the female feticide are running in rough weather as the initiatives taken by the state government hardly are hardly able to check the ever increasing problem of the declining sex ratio in the city. The ratio of the female as compared to the males is declining fastly in India and at some places the situation is really worrisome. To check this [problem, the state and the central government remains on heels and every now and then some initiative is taken but when comes to implementation they are not properly implemented. The city of temples is no exception to it. The city is also treading the same path as far as the problem of the female feticide is concerned. The illegal diagnostic centers, generally the small diagnostic centers which are running in large number in the city play a vital role in it. These diagnostic centers fearlessly conduct the Pre Natal Sex Determination’ diagnostic test which otherwise is restricted and in case of female child, the child is aborted. One more fact which has come to fore is that the number of the female feticide are quite high in the developed areas as compared to the rural areas because f eth easily available medical facilities in cities. As per the sex ratio census in 2008, the highest numbers of females per thousand males are reported in Bandipora, Shopian, and Ganderwal areas of Kashmir, where the ratio is 948/1000. Still the ratio of the females is quite less in Jammu which records a ratio of 889 per 1000 males as per 2008 census. In 2001 the ratio was 868/ 1000 and I 2006 the ratio was 878/100. This clearly indicates that in the last few years surely the sex ratio has improved, still there is along way to go. If all this figures have to be considered they surely indicated the loopholes of the government in strictly implementing the ban on the female feticide. “It won’t be wrong to say that the sex ratio has improved in the last few years but still in the sex ratio of the females are almost less than 900 in most of the districts of Jammu, whereas in Kashmir the sex ratio is considerably good. The illegal diagnostic centers in the city are one of the root cause of the declining sex ratio, firstly there is need to keep a track on such diagnostic centers which are not following the instructions of the government. It will surely help in improving the sex ratio”, says Hanna Khan, a U K based doctor from Jammu, who is working on this issue. “I have noticed that still the people here give more privilege to a male child in Jammu ad that is a big issue. They carry the same old traditional thinking that only a male child would take care of them in their old age and that is the reason they always wish a male child, “she adds. As per the 2008 census where the sex ratio in Jammu is 889/100, there only the ratio in Kathua is 913/1000, in samba is 896/1000, in Udhampur is 880/1000. In all these districts, it is the Jammu district which records the least sex ratio. “ We always say that education lends a major role in improving the scenario, but it is shame that the Jammu region which is the most developed region with more than 80% ;iterate people, is having the least sex ratio. The educated people are more aware of the t things and so they moreover misuse their knowledge. Though ever now and then debates are held to stop the discrimination between a male and a female child, we talk of women empowerment and the right of women, there only hardly all these issues find any place when it comes to their implementation”, says Dr Arrohi Sharma, a scholar. “The illegal diagnostic centers are one of the contributing factors to the ever declining sex ratio, so a ban should be put on them at the earliest”, she adds. |
