EARLY TIMES REPORT
RS PURA (JAMMU), Nov 25: Rakesh Giri -- a contract killer in police records -- and whom police shot dead Sunday last in an "encounter" near Satyam Resorts here lived in a one-room house in ward No 4 at RS Pura.
The doors and windows of the room are broken, its walls are in a bad state of repair and its roof is leaking. In the name of property, Giri's family has a faulty ceiling fan, few old and torn bedsheets, a stove and some utensils. The family lives from hand to mouth.
After his killing in encounter, police claimed he was a supari killer and committed murders in lieu of big amounts of money.
Had it been so, he would have at least made his and his family's living conditions better.
Police also linked Nagar Singh alias Nago with the incident, alleging that Giri had taken supari from him to kill ex-MLC Depinder Kour and other witnesses in the Amandeep murder case.
Police claimed that conspiracy to eliminate witnesses was hatched by Nago and Giri in Kote-Bhalwal central jail. It is true that Nago was lodged in the central jail in connection with the Amandeep murder, it was untrue that Giri too was lodged there. It became known when jail authorities denied the police claim, saying Giri was never lodged in the central jail.
The jail authorities further clarified that Giri was lodged in the district jail at Ambphalla in connection with PSA. Giri's father Jeet Raj, relatives and neighbours said Giri was picked up by police two hours before the alleged encounter. They said they would approach chief minister Omar Abdullah with the request to help them get justice in the case.
They also plan to call on Panthers Party superemo Bhim Singh to fight their case as they were so poor that they were unable to hire the services of a lawyer to contest their case in the court. Jeet Raj said his two minor sons were also picked up by police two days before the encounter for no fault of theirs and lodged in the RS Pura police station where they were beaten mercilessly by cops.
Alleging that cops had threatened them of dire consequences if they pursued Giri's case, he demanded a CBI probe into the incident. MLA Gharu Ram and ex-municipal committee chairman, RS Pura, Bhushan Dogra have supported Jeet's demand of a CBI probe into the encounter.
