India forced to spend fortune on missle development
11/26/2010 10:22:30 PM
When India successfully test fired the upgraded version of its powerful nuclear-capable missile in Orissa on Thursday it indicated that the country has decided to modernise and strengthen its defence mechanism against its arch political foes, China and Pakistan. In fact the range of the entire missile system, that India has developed and successfully test fired during the last over a decade, has been designed to have as much a long range as could bring China and Pakistan within its striking distance. The missile that was fired sucessfully on Thursday is an upgraded version of Agni-I. It is a 12-tone missile developed within the country having advanced navigation system. It can carry a payloads upto 2200 pounds. Already the successful test firing of short range Prithvi missile,anti-tank Nag missile and the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile has allowed India to have adequate missile power that it required during any external invasion. It's Agni-II missile has a range of 12500 miles that can put areas of southern China within its striking distance. The Agni-III missile can carry nuclear warheads across much of the Middle East. Well it is part of India's defence prepardness and one need not misunderstand it's missile development technology as part of its etra territorial ambitions. Mark the contradictions that India presents. On one hand the ountry has been spending millions of rupees on the development of nuclear and missile technology on the other hand more than 30 per cent villages in the country do not have electricity and portable drinking water facilities. On one hand India spends large sums of money on tanks and weapons besides fighter aircrafts on the other over 40 per cent people in the country suffer from malnuitrition. The country has not been upgrading its air strike and Navy with the result there has been an uproar among the senior functionaries of the Air Force and the Navy over its deficiency in meeting the enemy mishief in air and on water. Reports say that India Plans to spend several millions of rupees on the purhase of fighter planes, submarines and other gadgets the Air Force and the Navy require. It has been seen that upgrading the weaponary, purchasing new fighter planes and submarines and other range of war machinery has become an annual feature. The result is that the annual defence budget surpasses the amount earmarked in the sectors of agriculture, health, education and industries. If in the 2010-2011 budget proposals the Government of India earmarked Rs.2700 crores for the health sector it was Rs.147344 crores for the defence sector indicating an 8.3 per cent hike over the allocations made during 2009-2010 budget proposals. Over the years one has been witness to the meagre raise in the annual budget proposals for various development sectors but as far as the sector of defence is concerned the annual increase has been between 8 and 12 per cent. Imgaine the overall gains people can experience even if 30 per cent of the budget allocation for defence, Rs.147344 crores, was transferred or diverted to the sectors of rural development, heallth and industries. Gradual reduction in expenses on defence can reduce the level of malnuitrion and poverty in the country.India could achieve the distinction of a major player in economic growth and developmentt. But such activities seem to be impossible and that too when India's.
