The dead were identified as BSF cop Avinash Singh (32), son of Harbans Singh, his daughter Lovely (1.5) and brother Kulbir Singh. The incident took place at about 8.30 am when Kulbir tried to break an old shell in the courtyard to extract metal out of it. While he tried to break the shell, it exploded with a big bang, resulting in the instant death of Lovely, who was playing with her grandfather Harbans in the courtyard, police sources said. Kulbir's limbs were blown off in the blast. Father Harbans (70), brothers -- Avinash and Bhupinder Singh, a government school teacher -- wife Updesh Kour, mother Dalip Kour (60), Avinash's wife Avinash Kour and their 3-year-old son Puneet Pal Singh sustained critical injuries. Avinash, who was posted in 99 BSF Bn in Gujarat, had come home on leave about 15 days back. The house was also badly damaged with the impact of the blast. The injured were evacuated to the GMC hospital by the victims' neighbours. Sources said police and forensic experts along with a team of bomb disposal squad reached the spot soon after the blast and lifted the samples for the purpose of investigation. However, preliminary reports suggested that the explosion could have been caused due to active shell and the family must have thought itotherwise. Police were trying to find out how the explosive material reached the Harbans's house. |
